OU softball vs Oregon recap: Sooners edge Ducks to reach 14th straight NCAA super regional

Coach Patty Gasso and the second-seeded Oklahoma Sooners are facing Oregon with a spot in the NCAA softball tournament super regionals on the line Sunday in the Norman Regional final. The Ducks will need to beat the Sooners twice on Sunday in order to advance, while OU just needs one win.

The Sooners advanced to their 14th consecutive super regional.

OU will face either Auburn of Florida State next weekend at Love's Field.

Mid 7: OU 3, Oregon 2

Kasidi Pickering walked and Alyssa Brito and Kinzie Hansen reached base on fielder's choices, but the Sooners left the inning empty handed.

The Ducks' last chance is coming up in the bottom of the seventh.

End 6: OU 3, Oregon 2

Kelly Maxwell entered for the Sooners to pitch the sixth inning.

The lefty allowed one hit and struck out one Oregon hitter. The Sooners' ace struck out eight across seven innings on Saturday.

Mid 6: OU 3, Oregon 2

The Sooners' offense didn't record a hit in the sixth inning.

End 5: OU 3, Oregon 2

Nicole May stayed in the game to pitch the fifth inning.

May retired the side, forcing three consecutive groundouts. Despite missing the mark with a few pitches in the third inning, May has been stellar, striking out six and walking none in five innings.

Mid 5: OU 3, Oregon 2

The Sooners mustered one hit in the fifth inning.

Rylie Boone singled up the middle. Morgan Scott has allowed one hit in 1 1/3 innings.

End 4: OU 3, Oregon 2

Nicole May struck out three hitters swinging in the fourth despite allowing a double down the right field line.

Mid 4: OU 3, Oregon 2

Tiare Jennings gave the Sooners back their lead.

Jennings singled to right center field, scoring Jayda Coleman. After OU's third run of the game, the Ducks changed pitchers again, replacing Taylour Spencer with Morgan Scott.

End 3: OU 2, Oregon 2

The Ducks put themselves back in the game in the third inning.

Tehya Bird crushed a solo shot to left field. Kai Luschar beat the shift with a single. Ariel Carlson singled to left field and Luschar advanced to third after left fielder Kasidi Pickering's first error of the season. Then, Emma Kauf singled to right field, scoring Luschar.

The Sooners' right fielder Rylie Boone threw out Carlson at home and OU escaped the inning without more damage.

Mid 3: OU 2, Oregon 0

Taylour Spencer recorded a one-two-three inning herself.

Alyssa Brito and Kinzie Hansen flew out and Rylie Boone grounded out to second base.

End 2: OU 2, Oregon 0

Nicole May recored another three up, three down inning.

The Sooners' right-hander punched out Katie Flannery and forced a line out and a pop out. Alyssa Brito recorded a highlight-reel snag at third base.

Mid 2: OU 2, Oregon 0

The Sooners added to their lead when Jayda Coleman doubled, scoring Avery Hodge from first base.

After a 12-pitch at bat, which included seven consecutive foul balls, Hodge reached base when a ball clipped her face mask.

Following OU's second run of the game, the Ducks made a pitching change. Taylour Spencer entered for Elise Sokolsky and recorded two outs.

End 1: OU 1, Oregon 0

One. Two. Three.

Senior right-hander Nicole May retired the first three Ducks hitters. May struck out Kai Luschar and Ariel Carlson before Emma Kauf popped out.

11 of May's 16 pitches in the first inning were strikes.

Mid 1: OU 1, Oregon 0

The Sooners struck first on the scoreboard.

Freshman Kasidi Pickering lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Jayda Coleman from third base. Coleman singled up the middle and advanced to third on an Ella Parker single.

Alyssa Brito and Kinzie Hansen each walked. Tiare Jennings struck out and Rylie Boone flied out to center field.
