OU baseball vs Texas recap: Longhorns sweep doubleheader after series finale called early

Coach Skip Johnson and the 18th-ranked OU baseball team will try to win the Red River Rivalry series against Texas on Sunday in a doubleheader in Norman.

FINAL: Texas 12, OU 10 (7)

After a lengthy delay, the game was called by the Big 12 office. The Longhorns win the series after winning the final two games.

Top of the eighth inning: Texas 12, OU 10

Play was stopped a little after 8:30 p.m. due to the threat of severe weather approaching the stadium.

End of seventh inning: Texas 12, OU 10

Texas’ Max Belyeu led off the inning with a solo homer, his second blast of the matchup. With that, the Longhorns tied a program record for most home runs in a game with six. They also had six in their 11-0 win against UT Arlington on Tuesday. But OU’s offense responded. Jason Walk drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, and John Spikerman hit an RBI single.

End of sixth inning: Texas 11, OU 8

Texas’ Rylan Galvan hit a two-run homer off OU reliever Brendan Girton to extend Texas’ lead to 10-7. Ryan Lambert replaced Girton later in the inning and gave up an RBI double to Jalin Flores. In the bottom of the frame, OU’s Anthony Mackenzie hit a two-out single that drove in Easton Carmichael.

End of fifth inning: Texas 8, OU 7 

This inning was highlighted by a pair of two-run homers, one by Texas’ Max Belyeu and one by OU’s Jackson Nicklaus. Belyeu is 3 for 3, while Nicklaus is 2 for 2.

End of third inning: Texas 6, OU 5

Casey Borba added two more runs for Texas to make it 6-1 as he homered off OU starter Grant Stevens, who was then replaced by Brendan Girton. In the bottom of the inning with two outs, OU’s Jackson Nicklaus hit an RBI triple before Kendall Pettis drove him in on a single. Later in the inning with a full count, Jaxon Willits launched a two-run homer over the left field wall, cutting Texas' lead to 6-5.

End of second inning: Texas 4, OU 1

Will Gasparino extended Texas’ lead to 4-1 as he homered, driving in two runs.

End of first inning (Game 2): Texas 2, OU 1 

Texas started strong as Peyton Powell launched a two-run homer off OU’s Grant Stevens. In the bottom of the frame, Easton Carmichael cut the Longhorns’ lead to 2-1 with an RBI double off Lebarron Johnson.

Final: Texas 8, OU 6

Texas improves to 26-18 overall and 12-8 in Big 12 play, while OU falls to 26-15 overall and 15-5 in conference action. Jalin Flores and Casey Borba each had two RBIs for Texas, and Chase Lummus got the win on the mound. Kyson Witherspoon took the loss. Anthony Mackenzie led the Sooners at the plate, going 2 for 3 with three RBIs, and Easton Carmichael went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

End of eighth inning: Texas 8, OU 5 

Jalin Flores extended Texas’ lead with a two-out RBI double to left field that scored Will Gasparino.

End of sixth inning: Texas 7, OU 5 

Texas’ Kimble Schuessler hit a solo homer off starter Kyson Witherspoon with one out before Witherspoon was replaced by Carter Campbell. Later in the inning with two outs, Will Gasparino gave Texas a 6-5 lead with a solo shot that sailed well past the left field wall. After walking the next two batters, Campbell was replaced by Reid Hensley, who hit a batter and walked in a run before being replaced by Dylan Crooks.

End of fifth inning: OU 5, Texas 4 

OU’s Anthony Mackenzie drove in Michael Snyder on a single off Texas reliever Chase Lummus to get the Sooners back on top. Mackenzie is 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

End of third inning: Texas 4, OU 4

Texas’ Jared Thomas scored on a wild pitch to tie it at 2 with two outs, then Casey Borba drove in two runs on a single up the middle. But the Longhorns’ lead didn’t last long as OU’s Anthony Mackenzie hit a two-RBI double in the bottom of the frame, tying it at 4.

End of first inning: OU 2, Texas 1

Jalin Flores got Texas on the scoreboard with an RBI double down the right field line that scored Jared Thomas, but OU responded as Easton Carmichael hit a single that drove in John Spikerman. The Sooners then took a 2-1 lead as Michael Snyder stole second base and Carmichael scored on Texas’ pickoff attempt. Kyson Witherspoon was named OU’s starting pitcher, while Ace Whitehead got the start for Texas.
