HURON — Jake Olson and Watertown High School's boys golf team made it 2-for-2 this week by winning titles in the Huron Invitational at the Broadland Creek Golf Course on Friday.

Olson took individual honors with a 5-under 67, winning by four shots over Taten Mauney of O'Gorman. Watertown shot 296 and won by three shots over O'Gorman. Harrisburg was third at 305 and Pierre fourth at 306. Thirteen teams competed. Olson and the Arrows also won Tuesday at Pierre.

Kaden Rylance took third with a 73 for Watertown. Jerome Zebroski tied for 12th with a 76, followed by Jaden Solheim (T23, 80), Gabe Norberg (T23, 80) and Ty Lenards (T29, 81).

Watertown plays Tuesday at Aberdeen.

"It was a good win for us today with tough teams like Pierre, Harrisburg and O'Gorman there," said Watertown coach Corey Neale. "Jake and Kaden played great and Jerome played really well, too. Ty, Gabe and Jaden didn't have their best stuff but what they did great by staying in the round, not giving up and continuing to grind for their teammates. That's what we are going to need if we want to 3-peat as ESD champions and compete for that state title."

Watertown Girls Tennis

SIOUX FALLS — Watertown High School's girls tennis team rebounded from a 7-2 loss to Sioux Falls Jefferson on Friday to beat Brookings 9-0 and Aberdeen Central 5-4 in the Brookings Jamboree on Saturday.

"It's always nice when you can get a couple of wins against ESD schools," said Watertown head coach Ryan Zink. "I thought on Friday it was two pretty evenly-matched teams, but Jefferson played a little better than we did."

Watertown hosts Sioux Falls Lincoln on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Highland Park.

Watertown Cross Country

SIOUX FALLS — Watertown High School's cross country teams opened their seasons Friday in the O'Gorman Invite.

Brandon Valley won the boys division with a score of 22, followed by Watertown at 50 and Harrisburg 56. Brandon Valley also won the girls division with a score of 19, followed by Harrisburg 59, Watertown 76 and Yankton 80.

Race winners include Mikah Peterson of Brandon Valley (varsity boys' 2.5-mile run, 13:09.98) and Mia Wentzy of Brandon Valley (varsity girls' 2.5-mile run, 14:58.59.

WHS cheer and dance

ABERDEEN — The Watertown High School competitive cheer and dance teams placed fifth and eight, respectively, in the Aberdeen Central Invite on Friday.

Harrisburg won the 15-team cheer division with a 272.0 score. Watertown compiled a 216 score.

"The girls performed well at their opening competition," said WHS cheer coach Malory Hoffmann. "We have a strong cheer portion with a lot of tumbling. Our partner stunts need execution work, so that will be out focus this week."

Brandon Valley won grand champion honors in the 14-team dance division with a score of 260.0. The Arrows finished with a score of 221.75. Watertown was fourth in pom with a 229.5 score and 11th in hip hop with a 214 score.

"Our pom routine was very clean and scored really well. The girls also dance really well in the hip hop routine," said WHS dance coach Carolyn Fraher. "There were some timing and spacing issues that we will be focusing on in practice but overall the girls did really well for their first competition of the season."

The Arrows squads make their only home appearance on the season on Thursday when they host the Watertown Invitational at 5 p.m.

Don Ray Cross Country Invite

WHITE — Kamryn Nesheim of Clark-Willow Lake and Cooper Schaefer of Estelline-Hendricks won individual titles and carried their squads to team championships in the Don Ray Invitational cross country meet on Saturday at the Six Mile Creek Golf Course.

Nesheim won the 55-runner girls' 5,000-meter race in a time of 20 minutes and 9.72 seconds. CWL won the team title with a score of 14.

Schaefer won the 43-runner boys' 5,000 in 18:26.22 and helped the Redhawks win the division with a score of 14.

Jaycee Hourigan of Deuel was second (20:38.88) in the girls division, followed by Kaelyn Ulschmid of Arlington (21:21.75), Hailey Tiahrt of Baltic (21:43.34) and Kylee Johnson of Deubrook Area (21:45.06).

Landen Johnson of Deubrook finished second in the boys division (18:56.72), followed by Cooper Pommer of Clark-Willow Lake (19:02;12) and Deuel runners Tyson Hagberg (19:05.44) and Caden Hourigan (19:15.62).

John Collignon Cross Country Invitational

MADISON — Isabelle Bloker won the girls' 5,000-meter race and led Sioux Valley to the team title in the John Collignon Invitational cross country meet on Friday.

The Cossacks won the girls division with a score of 10, also getting a fourth-place finish from Liberty Trygstad (23:01.35), a fifth-place finish from, Talya Vincent (23:01.35) and a seventh-place finish from Maci Licht (23:0.06).

Carson Wosje placed eight in the boys' 5,000-meter race (19:35.12) to lead Sioux Valley's boys, who finished fourth in the team race.

Brookings, led by race winner Ernest Ting (17:44.79), won the boys division title with a score of 12.

Other Cross Country

Nicholas Schlachter of Potter County (boys, 17:58.54) and Heidi Olson of Mobridge-Pollock (girls, 20:01.27) won 5,000-meter races in the Mobridge-Pollock Invitatioinal on Saturday.

On Friday, Ella Boekleheide of Pierre won the varsity girls' race (15:02.36) in the Pierre Invitational. Aberdeen Central runners Joe Perkins (boys, 13:04.9) and Juna Ramey (girls, 16:16.55) each took second.
