Oregon will take its potent offense on the road for the first time this season as the No. 13 Ducks (1-0) head to Lubbock for a game against Texas Tech (0-1).

Here's what to know about this week's game.

About Texas Tech Red Raiders football

The Red Raiders opened the season unranked but receiving votes in The Associated Press preseason poll and ranked No. 24 in the USA Today/Coaches preseason poll.

They looked woefully underrated after jumping out to a 17-0 first-quarter lead against Wyoming last Saturday. Then came the collapse, as the Cowboys rallied to win 35-33 in double overtime and sending Texas Tech's season into crisis mode after one game.

Now come the Ducks, who oddsmakers predict will make the Red Raiders 0-2 by Saturday night.

Texas Tech's quarterback Tyler Shough (12) drops back to pass against Wyoming on Sept. 2 at Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie, Wyoming.

Texas Tech has some things going for it, however, starting with a senior quarterback who has certainly had his eye on this game for quite some time.

Former Oregon starter Tyler Shough will face his former team a week after throwing for 338 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

In his three-year Oregon career, which included seven starts in 2020, Shough threw for 1,703 yards, 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. He transferred to Texas Tech in time for the 2021 season and has started 10 games for the Red Raiders, with injuries the last two seasons limiting his playing time.

“First of all, he's a winner, right? The games he started last year they won," Oregon coach Dan Lanning said. "I think that he's had a lot of success in that system. They've learned how to use his talents. … He really distributes the ball well and understands their system."

Texas Tech defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter held that same position at Oregon in 2021 during Mario Cristobal's final season. Secondary assistant coach and passing game coordinator Marcel Yates was also on the 2021 staff at Oregon.

Recapping the Ducks' historic Week 1 offensive game

The Ducks opened the season with one of their best offensive performances in program history.

They scored a modern-era record 81 points against Portland State last Saturday, including 50 in the first half, which is tied for the fourth-most points scored in any half in modern-era history.

Oregon is just the 12th Football Bowl Subdivision team since 1996 to score 80 points in a game, and the first since UNLV in 2015.

Oregon running back Bucky Irving breaks free for a touchdown in the second quarter as the Oregon Ducks host Portland State in the Ducks’ season opener on Sept. 2 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene.

The 74-point margin of victory was the fourth-largest in program history, and the most since a 97-point win over Willamette in 1916.

The 729 total yards of offense was the program's most since 2016, their 348 rushing yards were the most since 2018, and their 11 touchdowns tied the program's single-game record.

What's at stake for Oregon football?

The Red Raiders loss to Wyoming last week took some shine off this matchup as they dropped out of the USA Today/Coaches poll. But it hasn't lessened the importance to the Ducks.

Oregon quarterback Bo Nix looks to pass as the Oregon Ducks host Portland State in the Ducks’ season opener Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023, at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore.

The upcoming Pac-12 season is looking more and more difficult to navigate with six ranked teams and the sudden emergence of Colorado, which Oregon will play in the conference opener in two weeks.

The Ducks can't afford a nonconference loss to an unranked opponent on the road.

Oregon football injury update

Several keys members of the roster didn't play against Portland State, including receiver Kris Hutson, linebackers Mase Funa and Jestin Jacobs, defensive back Evan Williams, tight end Casey Kelly and running back Noah Whittington, who took a hard hit on the opening kickoff and didn't return.

Lanning, staying true to form, wouldn't give updates on the availability of those players against Texas Tech.

“Yeah, I'm not going to talk about any injured guys," Lanning said. "Whoever we're going to roll in there with at Texas Tech, we're going to roll in there with. Feel good about progress with those guys, though. … Not going to talk about anybody that didn't play this past week. If they didn't play this last week, I'm not going to talk about them.”
