One local softball team, three baseball teams win state regional openers

One area softball team and three baseball teams opened the CIF State Southern California regional playoffs with victories on Tuesday.

In a local matchup, second-seeded Oaks Christian defeated seventh-seeded Moorpark 10-2 at home in the first round of the CIF SoCal Division 1 softball championships.

Freshman Terrianna Kelley finished 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, Ilove'a Brittingham and Rylee McCoy each hit solo home runs, Anahi Arreola was 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Justine Lambert went 2 for 4 with an RBI to lead the Lions offense. Emelia Davis pitched four hitless innings with six strikeouts and Paityn Lavin allowed just one hit in three innings.

Oaks Christian will host No. 3 Rancho Bernardo in a regional semifinal game Thursday.

In baseball regional openers, sixth-seeded Calabasas defeated third-seeded Birmingham 3-1 in Division II, fifth-seeded Westlake beat fourth-seeded Palisades 4-0 in Division III, and fifth-seeded Fillmore shut out fourth-seeded South Gate 8-0 in Division V on the road.

For Calabasas, Jordan Kingston allowed just one hit in a complete-game effort, Nate Castellon hit a solo homer, Desi Gonzalez and Phoenix Call each had doubles, and Jacob Dawahare had a hit and an RBI.

The Coyotes will play at second-seeded South Hills on Thursday in a Division II regional semifinal game.

Andrew Habermann pitched a one-hit shutout with six strikeouts and no walks, Nate Johnson finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Kaden Youmans went 2 for 3 with an RBI, Dillon Marrisett was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored, and Nate Franco had a hit and an RBI to lead Westlake.

The Warriors will play at No. 1 San Marcos on Thursday in a Division III regional semifinal game.

Jathan Magana struck out five in three shutout innings and went 2 for 3 with a double, triple and two runs scored, Ivan Becerra was 2 for 3 with a double and three runs scored, and Jacob Munoz finished 2 for 2 with a double and two walks to lead Fillmore.

The Flashes will travel to top-seeded Castaic on Thursday in a Division V regional semifinal game.
