Scouting Central Arkansas

Last season’s record: 5-6. 3-2 ASUN Conference

Best player: The Bears got a big boost with the addition of running back ShunDerrick Powell in the transfer portal. A 5-foot-9, 180-pound junior, Powell was an FCS All-American and finalist for the Walter Payton Award, which is given annually to the national FCS Offensive Player of the Year, while starring at North Alabama. Powell led the ASUN Conference with 1,508 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns. But don't overlook defensive end David Walker, who was also a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award as the top FCS defensive player after he led the ASUN with 21 tackles for loss and 12 sacks. He was also the ASUN Defensive Player of the Year.

The case for Central Arkansas: Central Arkansas is overmatched on paper and likely on the field, but the Bears could make a mess of things with their experience and FCS star power. And if the Cowboys struggle to mesh offensively with multiple quarterbacks and the new-look defense struggles, things will be a little tighter than expected.

The case for OSU: The Cowboys are bigger and more talented nearly across the board. And there is a strong desire to make an opening statement that begins to erase the sourness of last season and offseason from the minds of fans. That begins with a crisp showing of some of the new changes.
