Oklahoma high school track & field: Storylines, athletes to watch at 4A-A state meets

The 2024 Oklahoma high school track and field state meets for Classes 4A through A are set for Friday and Saturday.

Regionals had been scheduled to be held last Saturday but were moved to Monday because of the recent severe weather in the state. One regional for Classes 4A and 3A was set to be held in Plainview, but its facility didn’t have power and Moore ended up hosting.

State action for Classes 4A and 3A will be in Catoosa, while Classes 2A and A will compete at Western Heights. Classes 6A and 5A will compete on the same days next week at Western Heights.

Here are some Oklahoma City-area storylines and athletes to watch this week:

Top storylines for 2024 small school state track meets

Heritage Hall boys look to claim their second straight title. The Chargers won the Class 3A crown last year and are now in Class 4A. They won the North Rock Creek regional as they finished with 159 points, while North Rock Creek was the runner-up with 128. Heritage Hall won the 4x100-meter race, 4x200 and 4x800 and had two boys who were individual champions — Demarion Dean (400 and 800) and Zavier Freeman (discus).

How will the Douglass girls fare after winning their Class 4A regional at Madill? The Trojans edged Pauls Valley for the title, winning by five points and finishing with 122. Douglass had two girls who won two individual championships — Keniyah Fletcher (100 hurdles and 300 hurdles) and Brianna Jones (200 and 400).

Washington girls enter as a Class 3A regional champion. The Warriors won their regional at Moore. They finished with 175.5 points, while Marlow was the runner-up with 130. Washington had three girls who won individual championships at the meet — Ava Salcedo (100 and 200), Kelby Beller (400) and Julie Hohner (shot put).

Boys athletes to watch at 2024 small school state track meets

James Duncan, Sr., Chandler: He won Class 3A regional championships in the 110 hurdles (14.49 seconds) and 300 hurdles (38.86) at North Rock Creek.

Corbin Galt, Sr., Perkins-Tryon: He’s coming off victories in the 1,600 (4:27.64) and 3,200 (9:58.72) at the Class 4A regional at North Rock Creek.

Maddox Motley, Sr., North Rock Creek: The two-time defending Class 4A state champion in the 110 hurdles won that race in 15.18 and the 300 hurdles in 38.37 at North Rock Creek’s regional.

Quintin Richardson, Sr., Luther: He showed off his versatility as he won Class 3A regional titles in the 400 (50.43) and high jump (6 feet, 6 inches) at North Rock Creek.

Major Sharp, Sr., Tuttle: He won the 110 hurdles (15.51) and 300 hurdles (40.96) at the Class 4A regional at Madill.

Zane Zamanski, Sr., Southwest Covenant: He won the shot put (53-2) and discus (165) at the Class A regional at Stroud. He claimed Class 2A state titles in those events last year and Class A state championships as a sophomore.

Girls athletes to watch at 2024 small school state track meets

Destiny Downing, Sr., Community Christian: The Oral Roberts signee won the Class 3A state title in the high jump last year, clearing 5 feet, 6 inches This week at North Rock Creek’s regional, she won the event as she cleared 5-4.

Kenzi Readnour, Jr., Pauls Valley: She won the 1,600 (5:20.80) and 3,200 (11:23.54) at the Class 4A regional at Madill.

Savanna Meek, Sr., Crossings Christian: An Oklahoma Baptist University signee, Meek won Class 3A regional championships in the 100 hurdles (15.15) and 300 hurdles (45.85). Meek is a three-time state champion in the 100 hurdles.

Ava Salcedo, Fr., Washington: She won the 100 (12.43) and 200 (25.60) at the Class 3A regional at Moore.

Addy Washington, Jr., Heritage Hall: She won the 100 (16.58) and long jump (16-8.5) at the Class 4A regional at North Rock Creek.
