OHSAA track & field: Jonathan Alder, Licking Valley boys win Division II regional titles

The Jonathan Alder boys 3,200-meter relay turned in a record-setting performance during the opening day of the Division II regional track and field meet Thursday at Lexington.

Seniors Brady Tremayne and Luke Goode and juniors Mason Hermiller and Greg Nussbaum won in a program-record 7:57.89.

The top four finishers in each regional event, along with two at-large berths from throughout the state, advance to state at Welcome Stadium in Dayton. The three-day meet begins next Thursday.

Regional action at Lexington continues Saturday with running finals and additional field events.

Hermiller replaced sophomore Mark Goode in the 3,200 relay after Goode suffered a foot injury three weeks ago, according to coach Justin Creps.

“Mark was consistently our second-best leg of the relay and has not been able to compete,” Creps said. “Mason has filled in admirably, and the whole team has stepped up on their way to a CBC championship, district championship and now regional championship, resetting the school record twice in the last two weeks. The perseverance, grit and determination these young men have displayed is incredibly special.”

Later in the day, Nussbaum and Luke Goode joined senior Cameron Jewell and sophomore Ian Odell in finishing second in the 1,600 relay preliminary (program-record 3:25.81) to earn a berth in Saturday’s final.

Licking Valley’s Trevor Croak advanced to state by winning the discus (162 feet, 5 inches).

Heath's Carter Higgins finished fourth in the discus at regional Thursday, advancing to the Division II state meet.

For the girls, Columbus Academy freshman Morgan Spalding and senior Allison Klinefelter finished third (5-3) and fourth (5-3), respectively, in the high jump. London junior Andria Pollazek finished second (5-5).

Spalding earned third place with just one miss at 5-3 compared to two for Klinefelter.

“We were very happy with Morgan’s performance,” coach Chris Maelick said. “It was good to see her clear 5-3 and get a little confidence back after she had a rough district meet. Alli had a little bit of a rough day, but she did what she needed to do to move on.”

Klinefelter, who will compete at Clemson, finished fourth (5-4) at state last season.
