Ohio State men’s tennis beats No. 4 Michigan to take over first place in Big Ten

The No. 3 Ohio State men’s tennis team traveled on the road to No. 4 Michigan on Sunday with the inside track to the Big Ten title on the line. As the Buckeyes have seemingly done on an almost yearly basis, they took care of business when it mattered most in the conference, beat the Wolverines for the second time this season, and now sit alone atop the Big Ten standings.

The Buckeyes got the crucial doubles point by taking two of the three matches to go up 1-0 and set things off on the right foot. After OSU dropped the first doubles match, the pair of Cannon Kingsley and JJ Tracy won 6-2, followed by a 6-4 win by Andrew Lutschaunig and James Trotter.

On the singles side, JJ Tracy put the Buckeyes up 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 25 Patrick Maloney. That was followed by a 7-5, 6-2 win by James Trotter to put OSU up 3-0.

Michigan would make things interesting with wins on courts one and two, but then the door was shut by freshman Jack Anthrop in a three-set 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, victory to clinch the 4-2 team win.

With the win, Ohio State improves to 6-0 in the Big Ten and 23-2 overall. Michigan drops to 4-1 in the league and will now need some help to get back even in the regular season Big Ten race that Ohio State has now won 16-straight times, looking for No. 17 in a row.

The Buckeyes are next in action against Penn State back at home on Saturday.
