Ohio State guard and former Newark standout Emma Shumate enters the transfer portal
Ohio State sophomore basketball player Emma Shumate announced on Wednesday that she is entering the transfer portal.
Shumate made the announcement on Instagram.
"I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to play for my home state of Ohio," Shumate said in her statement. "I am taking some truly invaluable memories and friendships with me. I have decided it is in my best interest to enter the transfer portal."
The former Newark standout went to Ohio State after one semester at West Virginia before the start of her freshman season. Shumate averaged 2.8 points across 59 appearances in two seasons with the Buckeyes.
Shumate was a 3-point shooting threat off the Buckeyes' bench. Her most notable performance came against Iowa on Jan. 21, when she went 2 for 2 from beyond the arc in six minutes of play.
As a sophomore, Shumate averaged 4 points per game and was second in 3-point percentage for Ohio State, shooting 41.8%.
Shumate's minutes off the bench started to become limited near the end of the season, with Ohio State coach Kevin McGuff opting against playing her in the NCAA Tournament second-round loss to Duke on Sunday.
This marks the first Ohio State women's basketball transfer of the season.
Following the Buckeyes' exit from the NCAA Tournament, Ohio State starter Cotie McMahon was asked about possibly hitting the transfer portal. She quickly made her intentions clear.
