New Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles to earn $1.9 million per year

Ohio State will pay incoming Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles $1.9 million per year in base salary in his three-year contract, according to a term sheet released by OSU on Friday.

That will make Knowles the highest-paid assistant coach in OSU history. The previous high was the $1.5 million paid to defensive coordinator Greg Schiano in 2018.

Current defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs has a base salary of $1.4 million, as does offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day hired Knowles on Tuesday. Knowles reportedly earned $800,000 as Oklahoma State's defensive coordinator this season. He also will be eligible for the same bonuses based on team performance that other OSU assistants are.

Knowles also will receive a bonus of $138,850 within 30 days of the execution of his contract. He is set to start at Ohio State on Jan. 2 after the Buckeyes play in the Rose Bowl and Oklahoma State plays Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year's Day.
