Ohio high school football: Who won in Week 7? Scores, quick hits from Columbus-area games

Week 7 of the high school football season gave us a chance to cover four teams we hadn't seen this season.

Frank DiRenna made a road trip to London, where the Red Raiders hosted Jonathan Alder in a key Central Buckeye Conference-Kenton Trail contest. Dave Purpura went to Lewis Center to watch Olentangy Orange take on Dublin Coffman in an OCC-Central game.

June Turner helped London rush for 635 yards in a 57-48 win over visiting Jonathan Alder on Friday.

Friday quick hits

London 57, Jonathan Alder 48

  • The Madison County rivals tangled in a wild game Friday at London. The teams combined for more than 1,000 yards rushing, with the Red Raiders improving to 7-0 and 2-0 in the CBC-Kenton Trail. Jonathan Alder dropped to 5-2 and 1-1. The Raiders, who are ranked sixth in the Division III state poll, have won three consecutive games in the series. “We’ve been in a couple games like that, but with a rivalry like that, it’s special and you know you’re going to get their best shot and they’re going to get our best shot,” London coach Kyle Cutler said. “It comes down to a few plays.”

  • London had three players surpass 100 yards rushing, with Zach Jones leading the way with 248 and five touchdowns on 22 carries. Jones also contributed on defense, with his interception in the final minute sealing the win. Noah Fellure rushed for 176 yards and two scores on nine carries, and June Turner ran 10 times for 124 yards, including a 57-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter. London finished with 635 yards rushing on 57 attempts. “It’s not about one individual, it’s about the team,” Jones said. “We have one end goal in mind and that’s what we work for every day. It’s not one guy getting all the credit and that’s what makes us versatile.”

  • London’s win overshadowed an impressive performance by Jonathan Alder’s Cameron Jewell, who rushed for 357 yards and seven touchdowns on 26 carries. His touchdowns included runs of 75, 69 and 63 yards. Jonathan Alder rushed for 407 yards on 33 carries. “Every single down we went out and it was an all-out war,” Jewell said. “It (stinks) that we couldn’t come out on top, but I couldn’t have asked for anything more from my teammates, from my coaches. Everybody gave their all. Everybody gave 100 percent. I did the same for all of them.”

  • Both teams gambled on two-point tries in the closing minutes with the game on the line. After pulling within 49-48 on Jewell’s 9-yard touchdown run with 2:13 remaining, the Pioneers failed to convert a two-point conversion pass. After Turner scored on London’s ensuing possession, Jones ran in the two-point try for a nine-point lead with 2:03 remaining. “Our guys are fully invested in who we are,” Jonathan Alder coach Nate Snedeker said. “(On) defense, we got outgunned. They do a great job and it’s difficult to defend. We knew it was going to be a gritty game and a physical game, and our guys bought into what it was going to take to win.”

  • London will look to keep its perfect record intact when it visits New Carlisle Tecumseh next Friday. Jonathan Alder visits Springfield Kenton Ridge that night. “We’re a team and that’s what showed up tonight,” Cutler said. “Our offense is London. We’re going to compete. We’re going to go to the point of attack. We challenge our guys and we’re going to find a way to win.”

Levi Davis led Olentangy Orange to a 35-14 win over Dublin Coffman on Friday in OCC-Central play.

Olentangy Orange 35, Dublin Coffman 14

  • The host Pioneers (4-3, 2-0 OCC-Central) won their third consecutive game, and defeated Coffman (5-2, 1-1) for the first time in four meetings, thanks to an emphatic start on both sides of the ball. Sophomore quarterback Levi Davis ran for two of his three touchdowns in the first quarter, from 1 and 36 yards, and scored again on the team’s third offensive play of the second quarter from 68 yards to make it 21-0. The defense forced two three-and-outs to start, Treyton Schroeder made two interceptions and the unit allowed only one score before halftime, a 49-yard touchdown pass from Quinn Hart to Cameron Hairston. Davis finished with 131 rushing yards on 15 carries and completed 11 of 14 passes for 136 yards. “When you have a quarterback of his talents, you fight in your head about how much will we run him and how much should we run him,” coach Zebb Schroeder said. “We pick and choose our times because when he runs, he is so dynamic. He has great vision and he’s an elite thrower.”

  • Treyton Schroeder raised his season and team-leading interception total to six. The 5-foot-9, 150-pound sophomore cornerback, a first-year starter who missed two games earlier this season because of injury, made his first pick on the first play of the second quarter and his second on Coffman’s final drive in the closing minutes. “All week, we prepared for their bubble (screens) and go (routes),” said Schroeder, who is not related to Zebb Schroeder. “Those were their go-to plays passing-wise. They’ve been more a running team from what we saw, but we were ready. We play together and we have so much energy.”

  • Kobe Sharpe’s 14-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and a 7-yard TD run in the fourth from Cohen Weaver rounded out the scoring for Orange, which visits Upper Arlington next week. “Our kids have ridden some ups and downs early and it’s hard with all the outside distractions, but they’ve continued to believe,” Zebb Schroeder said. “They’ve been unwavering. I’m so impressed with how our kids executed the game plan.”

  • The Shamrocks endured a substantial loss on defense in the first quarter when linebacker Preston Scott suffered what appeared to be a leg injury and left in an ambulance. Scott, a 6-0, 220-pound senior, was injured with 3:10 left in the first and was attended to on the field for more than 10 minutes before being taken off by stretcher. Hart scored Coffman’s other touchdown on a 1-yard run with 9:23 to go. The Shamrocks will try to bounce back next week against Hilliard Davidson, which has lost three consecutive games after a 4-0 start.

Bloom-Carroll 35, Logan Elm 6

  • The visiting Bulldogs (6-1, 4-0) dominated the Braves (6-1, 3-1) on both sides of the ball and stayed tied with Hamilton Township atop the MSL-Buckeye. Dylan Armentrout rushed for a program-record 251 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries, and the Bloom-Carroll defense forced three key turnovers. Logan Elm had scored at least 35 points in each of its first six games. “We have three expectations, and one of them is to demand relentless effort,” Bloom-Carroll coach Jeremy McKinney said. “We want to be relentless in everything we do.”

  • Trailing 14-0, Logan Elm started the third quarter in a no-huddle offense and it worked, with Aaron Walters throwing a 39-yard touchdown pass to Cam Smith to complete an 80-yard drive. Bloom-Carroll’s offense and defense made sure the Braves would get no closer. First, the offense answered with a drive that ended with quarterback Ethan Thanthanavong scoring on a 3-yard keeper. The defense then delivered, as 6-5 defensive end Mike Stevenson tipped a screen pass and grabbed the ball for an interception. Armentrout scored three plays later on a 25-yard run to make it 28-6. After Bloom-Carroll stopped Logan Elm at the 3-yard line on fourth-and-goal, Armentrout ran for a 92-yard touchdown two plays later to close the scoring.

Heath 21, Utica 14

  • Heath’s running game proved to be the difference in this Licking County League-Cardinal contest. The visiting Bulldogs (5-2, 2-0) rushed for 306 yards and outgained Utica 443-208, and they used the run to hold the ball for nine of the game’s final 11 minutes after the Redskins (5-2, 1-1) had closed to within 21-14. Connor Corbett rushed for 191 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, and quarterback Brayden Bayles ran 19 times for 100 yards and a score. “It felt great to win this game,” Corbett said. “Now we have a legitimate shot to win the league outright. That’s going to put a fire in our bellies for the rest of the season.”

Reynoldsburg 35, Newark 21

  • Damon Griffin Jr. scored four touchdowns to lead the visiting Raiders (1-6, 1-1) to their first win, which also kept Newark (2-5, 0-2) winless in the OCC-Buckeye. Griffin reached the end zone so many times that Reynoldsburg coach Mark Philmore lost count. “It was four? I didn’t realize that,” Philmore said. “I am calling plays to get certain guys the ball. I don’t even think about who’s scoring. It was a good day for him.”

  • Trailing 14-7 and facing third-and-23 late in the second quarter, Mock hit Griffin for a 36-yard TD pass on a post, their second scoring connection of the first half. Griffin reached the end zone twice more in the third quarter. He scored on a 21-yard sweep and turned a quick slant into 45-yard TD pass as the Raiders converted third-and-13. Senior Cameron Turner’s 16-yard TD run with 18 seconds left in the third quarter made it 35-14. “We knew in the first half we hurt ourselves,” Philmore said. “We shot ourselves in the foot with some bad snaps and some penalties. … We were able to go out there and get it done.”
