Top-seeded O'Gorman closes Class AA girls final with 10-point run to win title

SIOUX FALLS — Top-seeded O'Gorman completed a perfect season with a decisive 10-point run in the final 103 seconds of the state Class A girls basketball championship.

After third-seeded Brandon Valley pulled within three points, the Knights (24-0) scored the final 10 points of the game to nail down a 55-42 championship.

The stretch opened with a conventional three-point play by Sydney Terveen and included a 3-pointer by Padyn Peterson, a field goal by Ruby Moore and two more free throws by Terveen.

Terveen paced the Knights with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Mahli Abdouch added 16 points. O'Gorman made 20 of 46 field-goal attempts for 43 percent and limited to the Lynx to 28-percent (13-for-46) shooting.

Ava Kallenberger paced the Lynx (19-5) with 14 points, Alyvia Padgett added 10 and Madison Geiver seven. Geiver also grabbed nine rebounds.

S.F. Jefferson 44, Harrisburg 40

Brinley Altenburg went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final 38 seconds, including two with six seconds remaining that clinched the third-place win for fourth-seeded Jefferson (18-6).

Altenburg finished with 23 points and Jaidyn Dunn eight points and eight rebounds for the Cavaliers.

Abigal Flanagan (15 points, 7 rebounds) and Jaylee Hofer (13 points) paced seventh-seeded Harrisburg, which ended its season with a 14-10 record.

Pierre 48, Mitchell 47

Lennix Dupris canned two free throws with 12 seconds left to nail down the win for fifth-seeded Pierre (17-7) in the consolation championship.

Ryann Berry produced 16 points and seven rebounds and Dupris 14 points for the Governors.

Second-seeded Mitchell (20-4) was led by Addie Siemsen's 16 points and Sawyer Stoebner's 12 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Lauren VanOverschelde added 10 points.

State B Girls: Johnson, Huntimer earn all-tournament honors for runner-up Arlington

Spearfish 59, R.C. Stevens 50

Sixth-seeded Spearfish (16-8) won the battle of West River schools in the seventh-place game, getting 14 points from Maria Bouman and nine each from Kate Scharf and Mya Kochuten.

Taaliyah Porter recorded 16 points and seven rebounds, Jessa Griswold 13 points, Brittany Jones nine points and Isabelle Higgins eight rebounds for eighth-seeded Stevens (13-11).

All-Tourney Team and Other Awards

Stoebner received the Spirit of Su Award and Rapid City Stevens' cheerleaders won the Spirit of Six Award. All-Tourney players included Lucy Moore and Abdouch of O'Gorman, Geiver and Padgett of Brandon Valley, Dunn and Altenburg of Jefferson, Flanagan and Hofer of Harrisburg, Terwilliger and Dupris of Pierre, Stoebner of Mitchell and Porter of Stevens.

Friday's Games

O'Gorman 57, Sioux Falls Jefferson 43

O'Gorman used a 22-5 scoring spurt in the third-quarter to pull away for the semifinal win. The Knights led only 20-17 at halftime.

Mahli Abdouch finished with 19 points and seven steals and Lucy Moore 17 points and eight rebounds for O'Gorman.

Altenburg scored 15 points and Dunn 11 for Jefferson. Ashlen Johnson grabbed 10 rebounds, Abby Horner nine and Dunn seven.

Brandon Valley 51, Harrisburg 36

Brandon Valley grabbed control from the start and turned back Harrisburg in Friday's other semifinal game. The Lynx led 10-4 after one quarter, 27-11 at halftime and 40-26 after three quarters.

Alyvia Padgett's 22 points paced Brandon Valley. Madison Geiver contributed eight points and Gracie Salter seven rebounds.

Flanagan and Makinley Lawrenson each had 10 points for Harrisburg.

Pierre 52, Rapid City Stevens 45

Terwilliger's 21 points and seven rebounds and Dupris' 20 points lifted Pierre to the consolation semifinal victory.

Porter tallied 23 points and Higgins eight points and 14 rebounds for Stevens.

Mitchell 54, Spearfish 43

Stoebner propelled the Kernels to the consolation semifinal win with 24 points, 17 rebounds and five assists. Siemsen contributed 12 points and VanOverschelde 11.

Spearfish got 15 points from Jozie Dana and 11 from Kochuten.
