Oaks Christian boys golf team advances to state championship
Four players shot under par as the Oaks Christian boys golf team advanced to the state championship by finishing second at the CIF/SCGA Southern State Regional Championship at Los Serranos Golf Club in Chino Hills on Wednesday.
Senior Jared Abercrombie led the Lions with a dazzling 7-under-par 67 to take second overall behind Diamond Bar sophomore Logan Park, who shot a 10-under 64 to tie Rickie Fowler's SCGA high school record. Sophomore Max Emberson, who the CIF-Southern Section individual title last Thursday, fired a 3-under 71 to tie for 14th place, freshman Broxton Borck had a 2-under 72 to tie for 19th, and sophomore Graham Christopher shot a 1-under 73 to tie for 29th for Oaks Christian.
Nick Benton had a 2-over 76 as the Lions set a school record with an 11-under 359 to finish six shots behind first-place Torrey Pines and earn one of three team qualifying spots for the state tournament. Classical Academy of Escondido shot a 7-under 363 to secure the final spot.
The state championship will be held next Wednesday at San Gabriel Country Club. Three teams from Southern California and Northern California will compete for the state team title, with individual state crown to be also determined. Oaks Christian is the only team from the Southern Section.
Westlake sophomore Sammy Bermant shot a 1-under 73 to tie for 29th, missing the state cut by just three shots. Moorpark junior Kemper Wilson finished with a 1-over 75 to tie for 49th. Westlake senior Jackson Turner shot a 2-over 76 to tie for 59th.
