Oaks Christian sophomore Max Emberson wins CIF-Southern Section boys golf title

Oaks Christian School sophomore Max Emberson fired a school-record, 8-under-par 64 to win the CIF-Southern Section individual title at the Individual Championship & SCGA Qualifying Tournament on Thursday at Temecula Creek Golf Club.

Emberson's bogey-free round was one shot better than Temescal Canyon's Nixon Lauritzen. Sophomore Graham Christopher shot a 73, senior Nick Benton had a 74 and senior Jared Abercrombie followed with a 75 as Oaks Christian finished with a 363 team total to take fourth place and secure the final spot in the CIF/SCGA Southern State Regional Championship. San Marcos finished first with a 358 and Palm Desert and Orange Lutheran tied for second with a 360.

Three other local golfers advanced to the state regional, which will be held Wednesday at Los Serranos Golf Club in Chino Hills. Moorpark junior Kemper Wilson shot a 70 to reach the next round. Westlake sophomore Sammy Bermant had a 73 while Westlake senior Jackson Turner shot a 74 and survived an eight-player playoff for one of the final two qualifying spots.

Westlake, which won the CIF-SS Division 4 team title on Monday, shot a 377 as a team but did not advance.

Hillcrest Christian junior Trey Tuyo shot a 75 and missed the cut by one shot.

Buena's duo of Brady McHenry and Adam Anderson, who both qualified for the CIF-SS Individuals, missed the tournament to play in a California Amateur qualifier. Anderson shot a 7-under 65 to finish first and McHenry had a 3-under 69 to tie for fourth at Olivas Links Golf Course as both advanced to the Cal Amateur Championship, which will be played at the Sherwood Country Club.

The state championship will be held May 29 at San Gabriel Country Club.
