Notre Dame takes second game of midweek series with a weird walk-off winner

Notre Dame baseball is having some fun so far on their spring break trip. Since this week has turned they’ve defeated Georgia Tech on Sunday, beat St. Jospeh’s on Tuesday and on Wednesday did the exact same.

It wasn’t easy for the Irish, as SJU’s bats were just as effective, especially late. Through six innings, it looked like Notre Dame would eke out a win, up 6-4, but that all changed in the top of the seventh.

St. Joseph’s would score five runs in the top of the inning, giving them a 9-6 lead, but this Irish team wouldn’t fold. They battled back with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game and then drama in the bottom of the ninth.

The SJU’s pitchers had been wild all afternoon and that didn’t change in the final inning. They would hit three Irish batters, the biggest one being Brooks Coetzee with the bases loaded, who got plunked for the fourth time in the game, plating the game winning run.

It wasn’t a traditional walk-off win, but regardless, the Irish will take the win. Their record improves to 8-6 on the season, with a three-game series at Wake Forest up next starting on Friday.
