Notre Dame, after national search for offensive coordinator, settles on in-house candidate

Dan Mullen! Andy Ludwig! Collin Klein! The possibilities were endless for Notre Dame’s offensive coordinator position once Tommy Rees went to Alabama to join Nick Saban. USC fans had reason to worry that Marcus Freeman would land a really big fish.

Instead, Notre Dame settled on in-house promotion Gerad Parker, who worked with the team’s tight ends last season.

USC fans are surely quite relieved.

Fighting Irish Wire editor Nick Shepkowski wrote the following about the Parker hire:

“Listen, I’m not going to be doing somersaults over the Parker promotion by any means. I will say I’m more on board with it after doing a bit more research on him earlier today. However, the feeling is still that of disappointment because he clearly wasn’t Marcus Freeman’s first choice.”

Gerad Parker versus Alex Grinch on October 14. That sounds a lot better than Dan Mullen versus Alex Grinch. Yet, it remains to be seen if USC’s defense can turn this obvious piece of good news into a real benefit — and a victory — in the 2023 season.
