Notre Dame baseball sweeps top-10 Virginia

There are good weekends and there are great weekends.  It’s safe to say that Notre Dame baseball enjoyed a great weekend as they hosted No. 8 Virginia for a three-game series in South Bend.

The Irish swept the Cavaliers, doing a little bit of everything right over the three games.  The Irish are now 23-15 overall and 11-10 in ACC play, good for third place in the Atlantic division.

Notre Dame has a midweek affair at Michigan State on Tuesday before welcoming back former head coach Link Jarrett and Florida State this coming weekend.  Here is a recap of Notre Dame’s three-game sweep of Virginia:10

Friday: 10-7 Win

Friday’s 10-7 win came behind Notre Dame bats that hit six home runs.  Three of those came from freshman second baseman Estevan Moreno, all of which were the solo variety.

Saturday - Rain/Snowed Out

If you watched the Blue-Gold game this weekend you know that Saturday was no thrill in terms of weather in the Bend.  Rain, sleet, snow, and general April awfulness led to Saturday’s tilt being postponed and made up as part of a double-header on Sunday.

Sunday - Game 1: 10-2 Win

Behind more lively bats and 7.1 innings of just 2-run ball by Blake Hely, Notre Dame took game two of the series early Sunday.  Designated hitter Vinny Martinez helped lead the way on offense with a pair of hits that included a three-run home run and a walk. Four more Irish homers were hit as Zack Prajzner Carter Putz, and Jack Penney all went yard as well.

Sunday - Game 2: 5-4 Win

Notre Dame was able to take advantage of four Virginia errors in the series finale in order sweep the Cavaliers.  Martinez again came through huge as his two-run double in the fifth gave the Irish a 5-4 lead which wound up being the final score.  Caden Spivey pitched 4.1 innings of shut out ball in relief to seal the victory and the sweep for the Irish.
