‘It’s not going to be easy,’ says Celtics’ Jayson Tatum of beating the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals

Boston Celtics star forward Jayson Tatum was clearly bothered by his team’s disappointing Game 4 loss to the Golden State Warriors in the 2022 NBA Finals, a lost opportunity to go up 3-1 instead sees the series tied up at 2 games each through the heroics of Golden State star Stephen Curry.

Speaking with the media after the 107-97 loss, the St. Louis native spoke on the loss, and whether it was more a matter of the team letting the game get away from them, or the historic, 43-point, 10-rebound performance erupting from Curry at TD Garden on Friday night.

“It’s tough — you’ve got to give them credit, they played well. They made some big shots,” related Tatum.

“We obviously felt like we put ourselves in the position to win the game,” he continued. “There’s a lot of things we wish we would have done differently, especially on the offensive end.”

“I think we just got way too stagnant late in the fourth from everybody, but it’s a new series, best-of-three. (We’ll) get some sleep and get on this long-ass flight tomorrow.”

His mood seemed to improve as he talked his way through the events that had just transpired on the court, joking with the press by the time he was asked how the team deals with making life harder for itself than was necessary.

“We don’t do this (expletive) on purpose. I promise you, we don’t. We’re trying as hard as we can. There are certain things we’ve got to clean up. Obviously turnovers, and movement on the offensive end. Would we have liked to have won today and be up 3-1? That would have been the best-case scenario, but it’s the Finals. The art of competition, they came here feeling like they had to win. It wasn’t easy.”

“I think that’s kind of the beauty of it, that it’s not going to be easy. It shouldn’t be,” suggested Tatum.

Now, it is indeed a three-game series with things tied up between Boston and Golden State.

And two of the three (if all three are needed) will take place on the Warriors’ home court. It’s not going to be easy indeed — but if it was, it wouldn’t be the NBA Finals.

Do the Celtics want it more?
