Northwoods League: Stingers pitchers have a good day
Aug. 3—WATERLOO, Iowa. — Willmar Stingers Josh Wintroub and Jon Mocherman had good evenings pitching and the defense played errorless ball.
It helped Willmar beat Waterloo 6-3 in a Northwoods League game Monday night before 1,106 fans at Riverfront Stadium.
Wintroub, a right-hander from Augustana, started and went six innings, allowing two earned runs, to record his first victory for the Stingers. The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder struck out three, walked one and scattered five hits.
Mocherman, a left-hander from Riverside City College in California, went the final three innings, allowing three hits and one earned run. He struck out two and walked one to earn his first save of the season in eight appearances and 15 innings.
The Stingers (12-11 second half, 28-31 overall) had 15 hits. Carter Howell led the way with a 4-for-6 performance. The center fielder and lead-off hitter from Augustana had two runs, a double, an RBI and two stolen bases. The Moorhead native is batting .309 (64 of 207) with five home runs, 48 runs and 32 RBI. He has stolen 22 bases in 25 attempts.
Jakob Newton went 3-for-5 for the Stingers with a run, three doubles and three RBI. The junior from Florida Institute of Technology is batting .312 (49 of 157) with 22 RBI.
The Stingers are off Tuesday. The Northwoods League is having its prospects games, called the Northwoods League Dreams Showcase, Tuesday at Copeland Park in La Crosse, Wis. There are two games scheduled, with the first one starting at 4:05 p.m. It features all the top prospects in the league, including Howell and teammates William Hamiter (OF, Alabama-Birmingham), Sam Malec (P, Minnesota) and George Arias (P, Arizona).
Willmar returns to action at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday at Waterloo (12-12, 35-23).
