Northridge, Bibb County top Tuscaloosa area high school baseball top 5 for week of March 27

The high school baseball season started in mid-February, and with the conclusion of winter sports earlier this month, it is now in full swing. Many Tuscaloosa area teams are slated to start area play this week if they have not already.

Each week, The Tuscaloosa News will rank the top five teams in the area, regardless of classification. Here are the top-5 teams in the Tuscaloosa area, regardless of classification, for results through March 26:

1. Northridge (7-6)

Why: The Jaguars might be sitting above .500 on the season right now, but don't let their record fool you. Out of Northridge's six losses, three came to Class 7A opponents ranked within the ASWA top-10: Bob Jones (2), Oak Mountain (4) and Spain Park (9). They have won five-straight games, including a 3-2 win over Bibb County on March 14.

2. Bibb County (19-2)

Why: Bibb County is one of the top teams in Class 4A. It started the season 15-0 before suffering losses to Northridge (3-2) and Gordo (2-0). The Choctaws have wins over Class 6A opponents in Brookwood and Chilton County, along with 7A opponent Tuscaloosa County.

3. Gordo (9-7)

Why: The 2023 Class 3A state runners-up have had a slower start to the season, but they have big wins under their belt as of late, including a 2-0 win over Bibb County, the No. 1 team in Class 4A.

4. Hillcrest (12-8)

Why: Despite starting the season 1-6, the Patriots have won 11 of their last 13 games and are currently sitting at 12-8. That includes wins over Class 7A opponent Vestavia Hills, which is ranked No. 8 in Class 7A by the ASWA.

5. Tuscaloosa County (11-11)

Why: The Wildcats are sitting at .500 and have played a tough schedule to start the season. They split games with Hewitt-Trussville, the No. 3 team in Class 7A, dropping the first one 1-0 in eight innings then winning the next one 12-2 in nine innings. They have played other ranked opponents in Hartselle, the No. 1 team in Class 6A, falling 10-8.

Other teams for consideration: American Christian Academy, Northside, Demopolis, Tuscaloosa Academy, South Lamar
