North Kitsap, Klahowya girls soccer secures state berths

Two West Sound girls soccer programs secured state tournament berths Tuesday night, both by shutout victory.

In Class 2A West Central/Sea-King Bi-District action, Olympic League champion North Kitsap put the clamps down on Steilacoom in a 3-0 win in Poulsbo. The Vikings, who've won 15 straight games since a season-opening defeat against Klahowya, took a 1-0 halftime lead on a goal by sophomore Syleena Hogan in the 10th minute. The assist went to senior Sophia Loverich.

In the second half, senior Evelyn Beers converted off an assist from senior Olivia Cary in the 46th minute and Hogan finished off the scoring on a free kick in the 74th minute. With the win, the Vikings qualified for state tournament play for the ninth consecutive season.

North Kitsap, the No. 2 seed in district play, will host No. 3 Sammamish in a semifinal game Thursday at 7 p.m. No. 1 Fife and No. 5 Sequim play in the other semifinals. Winners will play in the district championship Saturday at 2 p.m. at Sammamish High School. The third/fourth-place game will be held Saturday at noon at Sammamish.

Two other Olympic League 2A teams were eliminated in district play on Tuesday. No. 11 Bremerton (5-11) lost to No. 14 Evergreen of Seattle 2-1, while No. 15 Kingston (4-11) lost to No. 10 Orting 2-0.

Defending 1A state champion Klahowya prevailed in its first playoff game Tuesday, blanking No. 7 Annie Wright 8-0 in West Central District tournament play. Senior Ali Divano and freshman Addyson Dickey each scored twice. Klahowya secured a state tournament berth for the 13th straight year win the victory.

The Nisqually League champion Eagles, seeded No. 1, will face No. 3 Vashon Island in the title game Thursday at Central Kitsap High School at 5:30 p.m. Klahowya and Vashon Island split games during the regular season, with the Eagles winning 3-0 on the road in September and the Pirates winning 1-0 on the road last week.

Bainbridge football eliminated in play-in game

Bainbridge's football team saw its season end Tuesday with a 35-28 loss to Bonney Lake in a Class 3A district play-in game held at South Kitsap High School. The Spartans finished the season under first-year head coach Dan Schoonmaker with a 7-3 record.

Bainbridge and Bonney Lake (7-3) were tied 14-4 at halftime. The Panthers went ahead 27-14 before the Spartans stormed back to take a 28-27 lead in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Jack Grant. Bonney Lake scored the game-winning touchdown with less than a minute to play.

Juniors Hugh O'Neill (37 yards) and Garrett Goade (42 yards) had touchdown runs for the Spartans, while senior Luca Dubitzky caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Grant.
