NJ golf highlights: Ramapo's Harry Cohen wins Bergen Individual Championship; full results

ORADELL – Harry Cohen came painfully close to winning twice before, and the Ramapo sophomore finally won a title.

Cohen won the season-ending Bergen County Individual Golf Championship on Thursday at Hackensack Golf Club. And it was all the more satisfying after he twice went to a playoff this season and came up short.

“A lot of second places, so it’s just a really good feeling to get a win,” Cohen said. “I’m happy, and hopefully I can take this momentum into summer golf and shoot some good scores.”

Cohen won “The Luciano” by five strokes after his 5-over-par 77 at difficult Hackensack GC, combined with last week’s 5-under 66 at nearby Soldier Hill GC, gave him an even-par 143.

“He’s a special kid, and he had two heartbreaking losses in playoffs this year,” Ramapo coach Brian Gogerty said. “But the perseverance that he has, you can’t match it. The kid’s a competitor, and he just loves to play golf.”

Tenafly senior Jayden Ko was runner-up with 148. His 74 at Hackensack was the best round of the day in an event named in honor of Dan Luciano, the retired legendary coach who this year celebrates his 100th birthday.

“I just tried to stay in the moment today, every shot,” Ko said. “It’s my last high school round, so I tried to have fun with it.”

Three golfers shot 151 and the tie was broken via match of cards. Northern Highlands sophomore Ryan Klarreich shot 78 on Thursday and was third. Don Bosco freshman Aarush Malmandi shot 80 and was fourth, and Bergen Catholic senior Ryan Applin closed with 79 and was fifth.

Cohen’s five-stroke lead entering Thursday's finale was no sure thing. That’s because Hackensack GC, with its difficult hole placements combined with the wind, made it arguably the toughest challenge a North Jersey high school golfer faced this season.

“I tried not to think about it as best as I could, and just try to take it one shot at a time,” Cohen said of the five-shot lead. He finished with two birdies, five bogeys and a double-bogey.

During the season, Cohen lost in a playoff at the Arcola Invitational and lost in a playoff at the Big North Conference Bergen Bracket Championship. He enjoyed a stellar final week, though, leading Ramapo to Monday's NJSIAA Group 3 title and finishing seventh in the all-groups Tournament of Champions. And now he owns an individual crown.

“I actually hit it very well today, but the putting wasn’t amazing,” said Cohen, who had a quartet of three-putts and one four-putt. “But I guess it was good enough.”

“For a high school sophomore to come out here, and come out here with a five-stroke lead, and hold on to a five-stroke lead with as hard as this golf course was playing, he’s a special talent,” Gogerty said. “Kids like him don’t come around all that often. He’s got a bright future ahead of him.”

Dwight-Englewood, Glen Rock, Cresskill win at NJIC

EMERSON – Freshman Jaden Aroesty’s whirlwind week of golf for Dwight-Englewood culminated with a couple of championships.

Aroesty shot the best score at Friday’s NJIC Championship, a 3-over-par 74 at steamy Soldier Hill Golf Course, and led the Bulldogs to the Meadowlands Division title.

Aroesty’s 74 came one day after he was the only player from the small-school NJIC to advance to next week’s Bergen County Luciano Individual Championship at nearby Hackensack GC. He qualified after shooting 80 on Thursday here at Soldier Hill during the Bergen Nassar Team Championship.

Dwight-Englewood carded a four-player 320 to win the Meadowlands title, and that was a double-digit improvement over its last two 18-hole tournaments. In addition to Aroesty’s 74, Danny Lax was Meadowlands runner-up with 79, while Todd Merson shot 81 and Zach Wolpov 86.

“A 320 is a good score, because we’re coming in lower than our sectional and county,” Dwight-Englewood coach Dan Farinola said. “And that was our goal, to finish the last tournament with the lowest round.”

Glen Rock won the Colonial Division title with 340 and its quartet swept the top four spots. Will Casper was division champ with 83, Kevin McKegney was runner-up with 84, Brendan Burkhardt third with 86 and Jack Gault fourth with 87.

Cresskill won the Patriot Division with 365. Gavin Kim was division titlist with 82, Abigail Kim was third with 87, Min Sun Kang shot 95 and Andy Lee 101.

Aroesty was five strokes better than the field and earned his 74 via three birdies, four bogeys and a double-bogey.

“The pins were in the same spots [as Thursday] and the tee boxes were moved up, so it made the course shorter and more predictable,” Aroesty said. “And I was used to the greens, and the speed of it, and really dialed in on the greens.”

Bergen Team Championship is a three-way battle

EMERSON – The closest three-way battle in decades at the Bergen County Golf Team Championship and the winner by a tiny little stroke was … Don Bosco.

The Ironmen won the Large Schools title at “The Nassar” by one stroke over Ramapo and three strokes over Bergen Catholic on Thursday at sunny Soldier Hill Golf Club.

“It just speaks to the talent level in Bergen County,” Don Bosco coach Gerard Ross said. “Everybody’s shooting low numbers, and that’s what I love about it. I love the fact that we have a bunch of talented golfers in this county and they bring their ‘A’ game when it matters.”

Don Bosco carded a shoot-five, count-four score of 301, while Ramapo shot 302 and Bergen Catholic 304 on a par-71 course that played 6,225 yards.

St. Joseph won the Small Schools title with 311, while River Dell was runner-up with 329 and Dwight-Englewood third with 331.

Meanwhile, the team championship serves as the first round of the 36-hole Bergen Individual Championship and Ramapo standout sophomore Harry Cohen owns a five-stroke lead after shooting 5-under-par 66.

The final round of “The Luciano” is next Thursday at nearby Hackensack GC and three players are within six strokes of Cohen. Don Bosco freshman Aarush Malmandi shot 71 and is five strokes back. Bergen Catholic teammates Ryan Applin and Ryder Hodgson shot 72 and are six shots off the lead.

Don Bosco by a stroke

How good was Don Bosco? You needed an 81 or better to qualify for next week’s Bergen individual championship and five Ironmen made it with room to spare. In addition to Malmandi’s 71, Lucas Hofmeister shot 74, Cameron Ward 77, Stephen Viray 79 and his freshman brother, Julius, had 80.

Coaches were permitted to view the scoring online – players were not allowed to check their phones – and Ross said following along with the hole-by-hole battle against Ramapo and Bergen Catholic was agonizing.

“The live scoring that we used, terrifying,” Ross said, “because every hole the score gets updated, and we went back and forth with Ramapo. There was a challenge that came from Bergen Catholic midway through the round. And the last two holes, as the scores came in, we didn’t know how this was going to turn out.”

St. Joseph by 18

This marked St. Joseph’s first year competing in the Small Schools division and it dominated with the 311. The Green Knights have gone the entire season doing battle regularly with Don Bosco and Bergen Catholic and more than holding their own against the heavyweights.

Liam Moloney led St. Joseph with 73, Michael Asselta had 75 and John Souva 77. Padraig Leahy rounded out the scoring with 86.

“We’ve been really improving our games from the beginning of the season and we’ve been coming on strong and playing well,” St. Joseph coach Kevin Rooney said. “We’ve been a consistent team and I’m proud of these guys and it’s a nice way to end the season and gives us some momentum going into next year.”

Cohen is a handful

Cohen has been North Jersey’s top player this season. He earned Thursday’s 66 and five-shot lead thanks to six birdies and just one bogey. He has only had one bogey in each of his last two 18-hole tournaments.

Cohen has to wait a week to continue, but first he and the Green Raiders are headed to Monday’s State Boys Championship at Raritan Valley in Bridgewater. They seek a Group 3 title.

“It’s a little weird,” Cohen said of waiting a week, “but I think it might be better, to just not even think about it. It’ll be a little hard, but it’s fine. I just have to keep doing what I’m doing and it should be fine.”

A hole-in-one

Pascack Hills junior Daniel Sadrulah, 18, had his first career hole-in-one, on the 161-yard 11th hole. That was the difference in him making the cut to the Luciano, as he shot 80. He knew to put the ball away in his bag “right away.”

“I pulled out my 7-iron. I was between my 7 and 8,” Sadrulah said. “I decided, ‘I’ll just choke down on my 7 and see how that goes.’ It started left, starting fading a little bit, it bounced, and I thought it was just five yards from the hole. Nothing too big. And then the guys at the tee in front of us started jumping and yelling and everything.”

Passaic Tech sweeps at Passaic County Championship

WAYNE - Passaic Tech posted its first sweep at the Passaic County Golf Championship, with junior Tyler Cammarota winning the individual crown and the Bulldogs repeating as team titlist.

Cammarota carded 5-over-par 75 on Wednesday at the Preakness Valley West Course to finish one shot ahead of the two-time defending champion, DePaul senior Damian Scelba.

Passaic Tech won the team title with a shoot-five, count-four score of 333 that was 22 strokes ahead of Wayne Valley and 25 better than DePaul.

“Two years in a row, and it’s the first time the school’s ever seen it, Cammarota said, “But we’ll be back here next year for three.”

Golf continues to grow in popularity at Passaic Tech, and all five players finished in the top 15. In addition to Cammarota’s 75, junior Thomas Scheidegger shot 85, senior Brian Gaboda 86, freshman Zach Soder 87 and senior Matthew Antonucci 94.

“Two [titles] in a row after never having won one, it’s surprising,” Passaic Tech coach Jeff Bargiel said. “This team, they enjoy their company together, they go out and play on their own time, which is rare, and they click. They get along great, and they’re constantly practicing, competing, pushing each other, which I encourage, and then it shows when we go and play.”

Cammarota won it with two birdies, five bogeys and a double-bogey. His chipping and putting was the difference.

“My putting and chipping kind of saved me,” said Cammarota, who last week won the Big North Passaic Bracket individual crown and led the Bulldogs to the team title. “I didn’t hit many greens. I think I hit nine out of 18 greens, and I was draining putts from 10 feet to help me get up-and-down every time.”

Bergen Catholic among 5 winners at Big North Bergen Bracket

ROCKLEIGH – Ryan Applin, his Bergen Catholic teammates, and their longtime coach, Jim Jacobsen, all had something to celebrate.

Applin led Bergen Catholic to the Big North Conference Golf Bergen Bracket overall title Friday. His 4-under-par 68 paved the way for the team’s shoot-five, count-four score of 294 and 12-stroke margin over Ramapo.

“We felt that we were a good team and we weren’t performing well, so this felt like redemption,” Jacobsen said.

Applin, a senior, then won the individual title at Rockleigh Golf Course after surviving a two-hole playoff against arguably North Jersey’s hottest player, Ramapo sophomore Harry Cohen. Applin won with two pars.

Bergen Catholic senior Ryan Applin won the Big North Conference Bergen Bracket golf title in a playoff at Rockleigh Golf Course in Rockleigh on Friday, May 5, 2023.

Meanwhile, Jacobsen, who took charge of the Bergen Catholic program in 1983, became the first coach in New Jersey history – in any sport – to reach 1,200 career victories.

Jacobsen won his first-ever match here at Rockleigh and said, “This is where I started it all 41 years ago, so to do it here, and get 1,200, it’s a great feeling.”

There were five division champions:

Bergen Catholic won the United with the 294 and Don Bosco and St. Joseph shared second at 309. In addition to Applin’s 68, Ryder Hodgson had 74, Liam White 75 and Adam Sincavage 77.

Ramapo won the Freedom with 306 and Ridgewood was runner-up with 319. In addition to Cohen’s 68, Harry Nord had 73, Alex Jolakian 81 and Jordan Weiss 84.

Tenafly won the National with 314 and Old Tappan was runner-up with 325. Jayden Ko led Tenafly with 71, good for third overall, while Michael Crosby had 74, John Minnetian 81 and Noah Rubach 88.

River Dell won the Patriot with 335 and Ramsey was runner-up with 342. The Golden Hawks had a quartet in the 80s: Matt Volmar 81, Jayden Na and Matt Scipioni 83 apiece and Alex Na 88.

Fort Lee won the American with 334 and Fair Lawn was runner-up with 357. Rebecca Lee led the Bridgemen with 76, Aileen Kang had 83, Nick Park 85 and Ina Song 90.

Applin played his final seven holes at 5-under to force a playoff. He won on the second playoff hole, the par-4 18th, with a 2-foot putt, after he made a 6-foot putt on the first-playoff hole, the par-4 10th, to extend the match. That first par putt was huge considering he pulled his drive left of the cart path and his first chip was shy of the green.

“My mentality was just, ‘Dig it out of the dirt,’ and I feel that’s what won it for me today,” said Applin, the first to win Big North and NJIC titles after winning the latter while at Park Ridge. “I got down early today, and just to be able to battle back, never quit, that’s what I did the best today.”

Holy Angels repeats as Bergen girls champ

TEANECK – Holy Angels is leading a charge in North Jersey girls’ golf that could culminate with ground-breaking results at the NJSIAA Championship.

The Angels continued their dominance by repeating as titlist at Bergen County Girls Golf Championship on May 3 with a record-breaking score at Overpeck Golf Course.

Holy Angels carded a staggering shoot-five, count-four score of 3-over-par 291. That indicates the all-girls parochial school in Demarest can become the first North Jersey school to win the State title since the four-score format was introduced in 2009.

“I think it’s possible,” Holy Angels coach Pat Dunne said of winning the State title on May 16 at Raritan Valley CC in Bridgewater. “And I think these kids realize that.”

Holy Angels wins the Bergen County Girls Golf Championship at Overpeck GC in Teaneck on Wednesday, May 3, 2023: From left: coach Pat Dunne, individual titlist Angelina Kim, runner-up Inha Jun, Amelia Shen, Olivia Lee, and Sharanya Agarwal.

But wait, North Jersey golf fans, there’s more: Immaculate Heart, Wednesday’s runner-up with 316, and Bergen Tech, third with 327, also remain among the state’s top teams. It should be noted that, at last year’s NJSIAA Championship, Holy Angels was runner-up, Bergen Tech third and Immaculate Heart fourth.

“Girls golf, ladies golf, has come a long way, and they’re all striving to be better, and they’re all playing and working hard,” Bergen Tech coach Susan Polonsky.

“It’s nice bringing North Jersey teams to compete at the highest level in the State tournament,” Immaculate Heart coach Lauren Rhein said, adding, “And it’s just kudos to the work ethic, because I think that speaks volumes.”

North Jersey is thriving the past few seasons thanks to the influx of young talent, and Wednesday’s leaderboard underscores it:

Holy Angels sophomore Angelina Kim won the individual title with 4-under 68, while fellow Angels sophomore Inha Jun shot 71 and was runner-up via match of cards.

Two of North Jersey’s latest freshmen standouts were third and fourth, with Paramus Catholic’s Cassandre Mayer third with 71 and Immaculate Heart’s Skylar Lee fourth with 72.

Holy Angels had four players finish in the top 10. In addition to Kim’s 68 and Jun’s 71, senior Amelia Shen was fifth with 75 and freshman Olivia Lee was ninth with 77.

“The kids have been great all year,” said Dunne, whose team’s next tournament is Monday’s North Sectional at Great Gorge GC in Vernon. “They’re not satisfied with how well they play. They just want to keep playing better. They work hard, they go to their lessons, they come to my practices, they hit buckets of balls, and they deserve everything they get.”

“Our team dynamic is better. It was good last year, but we’re definitely having a better season this year,” said Kim, whose team’s biggest obstacle likely will be two-time defending State champion Wardlaw-Hartridge. “We work well together as a team, cheer each other up.”
