No. 2 Purdue basketball vs. Samford: What you should know about the season opener

No. 2 Purdue men's basketball (USA TODAY) opens the 2023-24 season against Samford.

The Boilermakers' story entering the season is well-known. They have excelled in recent regular seasons but have found trouble in the NCAA tournament. Purdue became the second No. 1 seed to lose to a No. 16 last season when falling to Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round.

The vast majority of the Purdue roster returns, including 7-4 center and 2022-23 National Player of the Year Zach Edey. Also back are regular rotation players Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer, Mason Gillis, Caleb Furst, Trey Kaufman-Renn and Ethan Morton. Fans want to know how newcomers Lance Jones (transfer), Cam Heide (redshirt freshman), Will Berg (redshirt freshman) and Myles Colvin (freshman) blend in. Coach Matt Painter is entering his 19th season.

The Bulldogs from Homewood, Alabama, are coming off a 21-11 season in which they finished tied for the Southern Conference regular-season championship. Starters Jermaine Marshall (6-6, 13.3 ppg, 6.5 rpg) and A.J. Staton-McCray (6-5, 8.2 ppg, 4.1 rpg) are back for coach Bucky McMillan.
