No. 1 seed Goffin ousted by Giron in Antwerp

American qualifier Marcos Giron pulled off an upset of Belgium's David Goffin on Thursday at the European Open in Antwerp, Belgium, knocking out No. 1 seed in straight sets.

Giron, ranked No. 94, took down the 14th-ranked Goffin 6-3, 7-5 in 1 hour, 40 minutes. The win propelled Giron into the quarterfinals where he will next face No. 8 seed Alex de Minaur.

In other round-of-16 action Thursday, No. 3 seed Karen Khachanov of Russia escaped wildcard Zizou Bergs of Belgium 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. No. 5 seed Canadian Milos Raonic moved past Englishman Cameron Norrie 7-5, 7-6 (4), and qualifier Lloyd Harris of South Africa upset No. 7 seed Taylor Fritz 7-5, 7-6 (3).

Khachanov will next face Britain's Daniel Evans in the quarterfinals, Raonic will square off versus Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov and Harris will take on Frenchman Ugo Humbert.

No. 2 seed Diego Schwartzman of Argentina moved into the quarterfinals in Cologne, Germany, with a 6-3, 6-2 sweep of Belgium's Oscar Otte. Schwartzman won 47 percent of his return points and notched three service breaks in his one-hour, 20-minute victory.

Canadian No. 3 seed Denis Shapovalov was upset in three sets by Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. No. 7 seed Jan-Lennard Struff of Belgium was also knocked out Thursday, falling to Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3). Italian wildcard Jannik Sinner eased past French qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert, 6-3, 6-1.

Schwartzman will take on Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in quarterfinal action, while Simon will next face Sinner. Nishioka will next faceCanadian No. 5 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.
