Nicholls football FCS playoff run comes to an end, Colonels fall to Southern Illinois

Nicholls football had its season end Saturday afternoon, as the Colonels (6-5) fell to the Southern Illinois Salukis (8-4) in the first round of the FCS playoffs, 35-0.

Saturday's contest wasn't as close as the scoreboard suggests. Nicholls only managed to get in the red zone three times — and came away empty each time. In the final seconds of the first half, Colin Guggenheim was turned away on fourth-and-goal, preventing a chance at a two-for-one as the Colonels received the second-half kickoff.

In the third quarter, a Pat McQuaide pass fell incomplete for a turnover on downs on a drive that started just outside the SIU 10-yard line to keep the shutout intact. On the last play of the season for Nicholls, another pass inside the red zone fell to the ground as the clock expired with the game already decided.
