NHL adds provision for potential Flyers-Panthers tiebreaker

The NHL has made provisions for a one-game playoff between the Philadelphia Flyers and Florida Panthers in the event that the existing tiebreaker system cannot break a potential deadlock.

The league made the announcement Friday. The season concludes this weekend.

The Flyers (41-26-14, 96 points) and Panthers (42-30-8, 92) could tie for the final spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs if the Flyers lose Saturday to the New York Rangers by exactly two goals and the Panthers win their final two games in shootouts.

The Panthers play the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday and Boston Bruins on Sunday.

The Flyers-Panthers tiebreaker game would be played Tuesday at a site to be determined.

The existing tiebreakers, in order, are:

-- Total points.

-- Regulation plus overtime wins.

-- Points in their head-to-head series, excluding the first home game for the team that has an extra home game.

-- Goal differential for the season.
