NH sports briefs: Brosmer runner-up for Walter Payton award
Jan. 8—UNH junior quarterback Max Brosmer on Monday earned runner-up honors for the 2023 Stats Perform Walter Payton Award.
Quarterback Mark Gronowski of FCS champ South Dakota State won the award, which goes to the FCS offensive player of the year.
Brosmer, who announced last month that he was transferring to Minnesota of the Big Ten, passed for 3,464 yards and 29 touchdowns in 11 games last season.
UNH senior running back Dylan Laube finished sixth in the Payton voting.
Keene State's Rautiola named LEC Player of Week
Keene State freshman Brynn Rautiola of Rindge on Monday was named the Little East Conference Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week for women's basketball.
Rautiola averaged 29 points, six rebounds and 2.5 steals last in a pair of wins for the Owls, who are 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the conference heading into today's home game against Eastern Connecticut State (4 p.m.).
UNH's Gagne, Hellsten take Hockey East honors
UNH defenseman Alex Gagne and goalie Jakob Hellsten on Monday were named Hockey East's top weekly defender and goalie, respectively.
Gagne, a junior captain, and Hellsten, a junior transfer from North Dakota, helped UNH to 5-2 and 3-1 wins over Princeton over the weekend.
Gagne, of Bedford, had two assists and led the team with six blocked shots.
Hellsten played in both games and made 37 saves on 40 shots for the weekend.
UNH (11-5-1), ranked 16th in Monday's USCHO national poll, returns to action this coming weekend with a single game on Saturday night at No. 2 Boston University.
Battle of Badges set for March 10 at SNHU Arena
The 16th annual Battle of the Badges hockey game featuring Team Police against Team Fire is set for Sunday, March 10, at 1 p.m. at Manchester's SNHU Arena.
The game benefits Dartmouth Health Children's.
Team Police will be led by co-head coaches Wayne Sheehan (Kensington, retired) and Dan Doherty (Manchester, retired). They will be assisted by Billy McBournie (Hillsborough County Department of Corrections, retired) and Kyle Daly (Manchester).
Team Fire will be led by co-head coaches Tom Nault (Concord) and Chris Couturier (Dover).
