NFL referee Max Causey urges Shreveport officials 'to find a purpose'

Former Shreveporter and current NFL game official Maxie Causey was the keynote speaker this week at the Shreveport Football Officials Association annual banquet at Shreveport’s Petroleum Club.

Causey, a West Monroe native who played collegiately at Louisiana Tech, worked out of the Shreveport officiating association before becoming a Conference USA official, then a Pac 12 official. This is his second season in the NFL as a down official and he recently worked the New Orleans Saints game in the Superdome.

“So many things had to happen for me to get where I am and I’m appreciative of everybody who has helped me, including many of you here tonight,” said Causey, who lives in Ruston with his wife, Megan, and two children. “I urge people to find a greater purpose in officiating than just calling a game. My purpose is I want to use it to draw people to Jesus Christ.”

The banquet covered a number of topics including naming the 10 men who will represent the Shreveport Association by working at the LHSAA state championships in December at the Superdome. They include George Booth, Brent Hicks, Wayne McCoy, Troy Booth, Lance Bethard, Robreyon Bowman, Tony Dixon, Haydon Johnson, Robert Underwood and Nick Campbell.

LHSAA PAIRINGS: Complete 2023 LHSAA high school football playoff pairings

Association president Trey Giglio and regional coordinator of officials Curtis Graham recognized a number of area officials for their service to Shreveport area high schools. A 30-year award went to Kelvin Moffett while Herman Hill III, Darryl Kimble, Bobby Robinson, Adrian Saldana received 25-year plaques. The 15-year flipping coins went to Casey Collins, Mike Sullivan and Todd Vallery, while 10-year lapel pins were awarded to Jason Leachman, Anthony Story and Ladarion Washington.

Causey observed the awards presentation and reminded the gathering to have a mindset about learning from their mistakes. NFL officials are evaluated after every game.

“Officiating is a great endeavor, but we’re crazy for taking it on,” Causey said. “Find joy in the process.”
