Newton finishes sixth, L-S seventh at Cardinal Classic

Dec. 5—Gentry Walston dominated his weight bracket at the Cardinal Classic on Saturday. The Lynnville-Sully senior registered three pins and a major decision and was the lone area winner in the field.

Host Newton entered 10 wrestlers in its annual home tournament and the best individual finish came from Conner McPartlin.

The Cardinals scored 53 points and finished sixth in the seven-team field. Lynnville-Sully had seven wrestlers for the tournament and placed seventh with 47 points.

Mount Vernon won the team championship with 176.5 points. Ballard (167), Johnston (157), North Polk (95) and Centerville (75.5) rounded out the field.

Walston's first-place finish came at 120 pounds. He was 4-0 on the day. He started with a pair of pins in pool play and then scored another pin and won 17-3 in bracket play.

For Newton, McPartlin finished third at 160. He was 2-2 with a pair of wins by decision.

The next best finishes for the Cardinals came from Kaiden Rogers and Nathan Milburn.

Milburn finished fourth at 182. He was 2-3 with a win by decision and a win by pin. Lynnville-Sully's Kyle Squires was fifth in the weight class. He won his final match 9-8. He lost 11-7 to Milburn.

Rogers was 1-3 and finished fourth at 113, while L-S' Hunter Van Wyk took fifth.

Seth Adams (132), Avery White (145) and Wyatt Weter (195) all were fifth in their respective weight classes for Newton.

Adams went 0-3 in pool play but rallied to win his final two matches 14-5 and 8-6. White was 1-4 for the day.

Weter won his first match but suffered an injury at the end of his third bout and could not return to the tournament.

The next best finishes for the Hawks came from Terran Gosselink (152) and Reese Dunsbergen (170). Both wrestlers won a pair of matches and finished sixth.
