UFC Terminates Reza Madadi's Contract Following His Conviction for Aggravated Burglary
The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Tuesday officially released Iranian-born Swedish fighter Reza Madadi.
Madadi on Friday was sentenced to a year-and-a-half in jail following his conviction for aggravated burglary. He was part of a group convicted of breaking into and stealing merchandise from a high-end handbag store in Stockholm.
UFC president Dana White wasn’t privy to the details of Madadi’s conviction at the time, but over the weekend indicated that if he had indeed been convicted, Madadi would no longer be fighting for the promotion.
And that’s exactly what happened.
“Following his conviction by a court of law in Sweden, the UFC organization has elected to terminate its relationship with Reza Madadi based on its Fighter Code of Conduct and the provision of its promotional agreement concerning fighter conduct,” read a statement released by UFC officials on Tuesday.
In addition to jail time, Madadi and his cohorts are also required to pay damages. Madadi has until Sept. 6, 2013, to appeal, but remains in jail.
The 35-year-old fighter has amassed a 13-3 professional record, including going 2-1 in the UFC. His latest fight was a victory over Michael Johnson at UFC on Fuel TV 9 on April 6 in Sweden.
