Seahawks punter Jon Ryan has had enough

Yesterday was a difficult one for all Americans.

The news coming out of Orlando that 50 people had been murdered in a hate crime/terrorist attack at a gay club called Pulse was a sad reminder of the divisions and violence that are so entrenched in our society.

What made it so much worse was the hateful, bigoted reactions by so many people on social media to the news. Instead of offering condolences to the victims, Donald Trump thanked everyone for congratulating him on being right about terrorists, but his was hardly the most disgusting response on Twitter, which is infested by people who are an embarrassment to the human race.

Last night Seahawks punter Jon Ryan encountered a similar such person on Instagram, and he’s since apparently decided to ditch social media altogether.

Ryan has deleted his social media accounts after he lashed out at one fan who took this heinous crime as an opportunity to remind us all that his religion does not condone the victims’ lifestyle.

Had enough says it about right, doesn’t it?

Murdering dozens of people should be condemned regardless of the victims’ personal beliefs or lifestyles.

Gabriel Rojas is a bad example and a poor reflection on Seahawks fans, but he’s only one of tens of thousands of people who couldn’t get over their own hate and simply offer a message of peace, love, or condolences at such a painful time.

I read dozens of tweets that were far more inflammatory and offensive than his after the news broke yesterday morning. Eventually, it got too upsetting and I logged out.

Given the nature of my job, I don’t have much choice but to keep tabs on social media, if not actively participate too much. The more I read though, the more I want to follow Jon Ryan’s example and delete it all.

The anonymity of the internet allows for a lot of freedom, but it also enables sick people to hide behind a mask and spew ideas that would (hopefully) be roundly rejected in person and polite society.

I’ve had enough of Twitter trolls who are only fluent in the language of hate.

I’ve had enough of the epidemic of gun violence in this country, which is the main reason I left Chicago for Seattle in the first place.

Most of all, I have had enough with our elected puppets who apparently can’t get enough of this carnage on a daily basis or simply don’t care enough to actually do something.

Jon Ryan is originally from Canada, which is sounding like a pretty cool place to settle down right about now…
