Former Titans, yes but it just doesn't happen

I’m really a bit blown away. The Titans started rookie camp and most of the questions I received are about backup quarterbacks, not necessarily the rookies. It’s interesting. I suppose this means that once they started practicing, fans biggest concerns came out.

I did notice that Mularkey was quoted as saying he will be ready for training camp over n over to saying ‘we hope he is ready’ or we are hopeful or somesuch. I didn’t think anything of it. Sometimes we nitpick words too much and I felt like I was doing so. The Titans do not seem to have any sense of worry that he’ll be ready. There have been quotes about the 2017 season since the day he hurt himself and… I don’t think we should glean anything negative from Mularkey using the word hope or hopeful.

Cassel seems to be a nice guy and by so many accounts he is quite the professional too. I have zero issues with him being in camp. He is exactly the type of player the Titans(and every NFL team) wants in camp. My concerns are in regards to playing and his lack of success the last few years. In my opinion, he looks like a veteran hanging on too long.

Alex Tanney I have been curious of since his infamous YouTube videos. He’ll be 30 years old this year. The Titans have been developing him “forever.” At some point, the Titans either need to deem him capable of being the primary backup or question their own process of developing a young quarterback. By 30, they should know if he is going to “pan out” or not.

I like almost every college suggestion you guys have. I want someone new, maybe two new quarterbacks. I want that new hope they bring. I would love for the Titans to have some classic type backup that can come in like a baseball closer and finish whatever Mariota started, but I’d settle for some hope.

I have no idea what Armanti Edwards is doing now, but it’s touching that so many remember how much of a fan of his I was. I would, absolutely, want the Edwards from years ago to be Mariota’s backup. It’s not years ago though and I’m not sure he still has “it” or is even in shape to play in the NFL. I’m past that daydream. Cutler works for TV now, Fitz is in Miami, and Kaepernick signed with the Seahawks. They are all “has beens” in my opinion.

If you write in the Titans should sign John Doe from small school USA because he put the team on his back and led them to victory despite blah blah blah….yeah that guy. The market for veteran quarterbacks is poor. It’s the worst I can ever recall. Soooo yeah let’s go with that college gusto. Let’s paint our faces, act goofy, and cheer on some nobody from Whassamatta U. I’m up for anything, just about any suggestion. This guy won 24 games in three years…OK him. This guy has the moves of a running back and ran for a zillion yards while throwing key third downs…. OK him. Every single suggestion I am onboard with.

As I mentioned, the way you all wrote in that is a sign of concern. The way I am like “yeah anybody else” that’s indicative too. I think there’s a common them from Titans fans that it’s time for a change at the backup quarterback spot(s).

Trade

I want to say no. I almost have to say no. I am absolutely inclined to say no but…. it’s a need and the way Marcus has been getting hurt every year… ok, it could happen. Yep, I can imagine a trade for a quality backup. Several of you have “twisted my arm” and now I am leaning toward it being a possibility. I don’t know that it’s likely, but I have to agree that it’s logical.

Made of glass

If “our boy” Marcus gets hurt again where he is out for the year, that will dramatically impact the team’s plans. There have been players in all sports that get hurt “often,” yet are impressive when they are healthy and ultimately it becomes a bitter pill to swallow. I’m pretty sure that’s where that “made of glass” expression stems from and it would definitely change things. Your guess is as good as mine as to how things would change, but I think we can all agree that his backup would have to be a “top notch” backup in 2018 then. Like many of you, this worry freaks me out a bit and I don’t want to think on it. Let’s just hope we can enjoy a long prosperous career from one of the best young quarterbacks in football.
