Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz will work on mechanics

Selected number two overall in the 2016 NFL Draft, Carson Wentz proved himself as both the current and future quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. Throwing for a NFL rookie record 379 completions this season to set the record, Wentz proved that he has the raw ability to be an NFL quarterback, something many questioned thanks to his college days at a Division two school.

However, one area that Wentz struggled in this season was his mechanics. Whether it be sat back in the pocket or scrambling to the corner, Wentz was inconsistent in the way he threw the football this season. On his good days, Wentz could drop the ball on a dime 30-yards down the field. On his off days, well, the 14 interceptions kind of make the case for us.

While these mistakes were attributed to his status as a rookie early on in the season, it was not until Philadelphia favorite Ron Jaworski noticed that Wentz had some mechanical errors in his throwing motion. When throwing the football, Wentz does have a tendicy to drop his arm, creating a long throwing motion. These split seconds lost could be the difference between a catch and a missed opportunity.

Speaking to the media in his last press conference of the season, Wentz opened up about potentially working with a quarterback guru this offseason.

“It’s definitely in consideration, yeah. We’re working through some of those things. Again, I don’t have a lot of answers for the offseason yet because I haven’t had a ton of time to think about it yet but I could see that happening. You’ve got to continually refine your mechanics. I don’t think there’s any one big glaring thing. But you’ve got to be consistent.”

Such a move could mean great things for the Philadelphia Eagles next season. Guru’s such as Tom House have worked with players like Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Carson Palmer, and Alex Smith over the course of his career. Considering the ability of all four of the above players, Wentz should benefit from working with such a coach.

However, while such a move would undoubtedly help Carson Wentz, the overall success of the Eagles for next season still lies with the team. Addressing some glaring holes and adding reinforcements to key positions are all musts for Philly. Between those moves and an improved Carson Wentz, the Philadelphia Eagles may be a formidable opponent next season.
