Packers' Woodson will sit out another week
Another week, another snap decision by the Green Bay Packers' medical staff regarding Charles Woodson.
As it has in previous weeks, the team made an early declaration on the status of the veteran safety, ruling him out Wednesday for Sunday's significant regular-season finale at Minnesota. Woodson hasn't played since he suffered a broken collarbone in the Oct. 21 win at St. Louis, though he's been able to do some things in practice the last month.
"I know he's disappointed," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said of Woodson missing a ninth straight game. "This is a game that he really would like to play in, but this is clearly based on (team doctor Pat) McKenzie's recommendation."
Woodson said after practice Wednesday that he didn't have a setback in his recovery and that one more week of not playing is being done for precautionary reasons.
The Packers want to have the 15th-year vet and eight-time Pro Bowl selection fully healthy for the postseason. With a win Sunday, they would clinch the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs and a first-round bye.
Woodson isn't concerned about not having any game action in what would be almost three months if he's cleared for Green Bay's first contest in the playoffs.
"Whenever the time comes, I know how to play football," he said. "That's one thing you don't (forget). Just because you have time off doesn't mean you forget how to play the game. I know how to play the game. I know the defense, and so when that time comes, I'll be ready."
Second-year player M.D. Jennings has been starting in Woodson's prolonged absence.
