Packers close to signing RB Benson

The Green Bay Packers are close to signing free-agent running back Cedric Benson, ESPN reported Friday.

Benson, 29, was with the Cincinnati Bengals for the past four years and rushed for at least 1,000 yards in each of the last three years.

The Packers are need of running back help since they did not re-sign veteran free agent Ryan Grant in the offseason. James Starks is the most experienced running back on the team.

Starks, Marc Tyler and Alex Green carried the ball during Thursday's 21-13 preseason loss at the San Diego Chargers.

Benson was the fourth overall draft choice of the Chicago Bears in 2005 and has had off-the-field issues throughout his career. Most recently, he was suspended for a game last year for two misdemeanor assault arrests.
