Overview of the 2017 Redskins NFL Draft – Part Two
The last 6 picks the Washington Redskins had in the 2017 NFL Draft began with the selection of Montae Nicholson in Round 4, pick 123 from Michigan State (quarterback Kirk Cousins’ alma mater). Nicholson has good speed for a safety, ran 4.42 forty at the Combine. He is 6’2″ tall and an athletic 212 lbs. The knock on Nicholson is his tackling and he had surgery for a torn labrum in March. The Redskins coaches believe Nicholson has potential but needs more coaching and confidence.
Pick 6 at 154 of round 5 has the Redskins selecting a tight end, Jeremy Sprinkle from University of Arkansas. Jeremy Sprinkle is 6’5″ tall, 252 lbs., and will be a big threat in the red zone. Like all rookies, he will need work, practice and good coaching. Tight end Niles Paul has missed many games with injuries and Vernon Davis will probably only play another season or two, so we do need another tight end.
Pick 7, at 199, the Redskins selected Chase Roullier, a guard and center from University of Wyoming. He is 6’4″ tall, 312 lbs. and has strength with good instincts. I am confident offensive line guru Bill Callahan can develop Roullier into a great interior lineman in time. It is important to have depth at offensive line positions. The “Great Wall of Washington” is becoming a reality under coach Bill Callahan.
The Redskins used their 8th pick in round 6, 209 on Robert Davis, a wide receiver from Georgia State. He is 6’3″ tall and 220 lbs. He gives the Redskins depth at the wide receiver position.
The 9th pick was used to select safety Josh Harvey-Clemons from Louisville. He has the wingspan of a two-car garage. He is 6’4″ tall and weighs 217 lbs. He has a history of failed drug tests for marijuana, so he may be a risk for suspensions in the NFL. That would have prevented me from drafting Harvey-Clemons, but the Redskins selected him. Time will tell if he is worthy of being a Washington Redskin.
Washington spent their last pick on Joshua Holsey of Auburn. He has played both cornerback and safety. At the Combine he ran a 4.48 forty. I think to make the team, he will have to excel on Special Teams. It is obvious our Redskins had another very good draft. I graded it B+, or A-. We should thank our Redskins Draft team for a job well done. HTTR!
