Donald Trump campaign concerns Michael Bennett

Michael Bennett is never afraid to share his thoughts on any subject, including one as divisive as Presidential politics. Yesterday when he was asked about Fletcher Cox’s massive new contract Bennett replied that he was more worried about bigger issues, like the so-called campaign that Donald Trump is running.

Here’s what Bennett had to say, per Lorenzo Reyes of USA Today.

Michael Bennett on Donald Trump campaign:

“I pay more attention to things like Donald Trump and stuff like that… The quote-unquote campaign that’s going on right now. I’m concerned with the political stuff that’s going on in the world. Too much beef. People are eating too much beef, so I don’t really pay attention to many contracts. It can make your stomach hurt.”

Maybe Bennett is refering to the amount of protein in the average American diet. More likely he’s talking about the red meat that Donald Trump is throwing his hardcore supporters at increasingly violent and hateful rallies throughout the United States.

A rally on Tuesday in Greensboro was a perfect example of the kind of behavior that Trump has tacitly and sometimes explicitly endorsed.

This is not the first time that Bennett has weighed in on the 2016 race. He previously endorsed Bernie Sanders for President, a move which he took no small amount of flak over.

Usually I try to steer away from politics on this blog but sometimes events make it necessary to speak out. Part of what I like about Bennett and the Seahawks in general is they try to make a difference on issues that are larger than football.

Earlier this week Seattle’s long-time punter Jon Ryan took issue with an Instagram user who made bigoted comments about the Orlando shooting victims’ identity.

Ryan went so far as to say that he’d rather not see people like that root for the Seahawks before he deleted his social media accounts. Bravo.

Bennett and Ryan aren’t alone in their social awareness. Star Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman recently said on John Clayton’s new radio program that if he were President, he would reduce the deficit by forcing billionaire NFL owners to fund their own stadiums rather than taxpayers.

Truly Radical stuff.

Anyway, Bennett’s concern is well-founded. Donald Trump is drawing some very clear cultural lines in this country. He might make some legitimate points about jobs being shipped overseas but the kind of language that he’s used to demonize Mexicans, Muslims and other minorities should be rejected by all decent people.

I commend Michael Bennett on speaking out against the very real and very dangerous elements that Trump’s campaign has brought out.

As for his contract, Bennett still has two years left on his current deal, which might make him the league’s most underpaid defensive lineman. Bennett makes no secret that he is unhappy about it, but instead of blaming other people for his problems, he’s showing up to Mini-Camp and doing his job anyway.

Trump’s most rabid supporters who think undocumented immigrants are the reason why they can’t find a job could learn a lot from that example.
