How Broncos can finally get through Colts

NFL: Indianapolis Colts at Denver Broncos
NFL: Indianapolis Colts at Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos have dominated so many great quarterbacks and teams since 2012. They made Tom Brady look silly twice last year. They shut down MVP Cam Newton in the Super Bowl. They held Aaron Rodgers to 77 passing yards. They’re 5-1 in their last eight against Alex Smith .

But Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts have been the one team that they have been outplayed by. The Colts are 3-1 against the Broncos since 2013, including a victory in the AFC Divisional Round two years ago. The Broncos pass-rush is the NFL’s best, and the Colts offensive line is one of the worst. Yet the Broncos have ONE sack on Luck in the last two games.

Denver lost 27-24 in Indianapolis last year, but it should have been a blowout for the Colts. They had no answer for T.Y. Hilton. Donte Moncrief, Dwayne Allen, Frank Gore or Ahmad Bradshaw. The latter is gone, but the other four are dangerous threats. Denver needs to play more man-to-man here.

Obviously, blitzing Luck hasn’t worked for the Broncos. Whatever the reason is, they just cannot seem to get anywhere near him. His rocket arm and mobility in the pocket help him avoid sacks. He has plenty of weapons at his disposal. So the Broncos need to simply dare him to throw.

Chris Harris Jr. should be on T.Y. Hilton. You’ll likely see Bradley Roby on Donte Moncrief. That allows Darian Stewart and T.J. Ward to get crafty.

As for the offense? Come on. They’ll be fine. The Colts only have one of the NFL’s worst defenses. The Broncos win this game as long as they slow down Luck.
