Baker Mayfield: Arrest was 'biggest mistake of my life'

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield issued a lengthy apology Tuesday for his Saturday morning arrest.

The 2016 Heisman finalist was arrested in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and charged with disorderly conduct, fleeing, resisting arrest and public intoxication. He was arrested by the Fayetteville Police Department and booked at around 8 a.m. according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Department booking log.

In his apology, Mayfield apologized to Oklahoma officials, his family, friends and all Oklahoma fans. He said in the apology that “I made the biggest mistake of my life by putting myself in this situation.”

To my parents and brother, I am extremely sorry for bringing this embarrassment to the Mayfield name. I know you will forever tell me it is okay and that you are not mad or upset with me, but I was raised better. i was raised to do the right thing in every situation no matter who is watching. I am sorry. Also, to my close friends here in Norman and those back home in Lake Travis, I have misrepresented you and brought negative attention to the places that we are so proud to call home. For that, I am extremely sorry. I promise nothing like this mistake will ever happen again. I will make you all proud, and I will forever represent you in the way that you all deserve.

Mayfield’s court hearing for his misdemeanor charges has been moved to April 7. Police said that Mayfield told them he tried to break up an altercation, but ran away after screaming profanities at an officer. He was allegedly tackled by police and refused to put his arms on his back to be handcuffed.
