Newcastle v Tottenham LIVE: Premier League result and reaction as Isak and Gordon star in big win

 (REUTERS)

Alexander Isak smashed his way through the 20-goal barrier as Newcastle United boosted their European hopes by denting those of Tottenham Hotspur.

The Magpies’ £63m record signing produced two sumptuous finishes either side of Anthony Gordon’s strike to take his tally for the campaign to 21 before Fabian Schar’s thunderous late header secured a 4-0 win at St James’ Park.

It was their third victory in four Premier League outings and ended fourth-placed Spurs’ three-match unbeaten run, and while it might not have been as spectacular as last season’s 6-1 rout in the corresponding fixture, it was equally emphatic.

Head coach Eddie Howe once again set up his team to suck in the visitors and then hit them on the break, and the plan worked to perfection on an day defender Micky van de Ven in particular will want to forget quickly as he was sat down for both first-half goals.

Howe speaks to TNT

15:15 , Chris Wilson

Eddie Howe is beaming as he speaks to TNT.

“We felt we needed to change to give ourselves the best chance of what we wanted to do.

“I thought tactically it worked, it was a really good delivery from the players, they always deserve the praise for the execution. Our concentration levels were really good.”

On finishing in the European places, he says: “Who knows, we’ve just got to keep doing our bit which is trying to win every game.

“We’re hopefully returning to somewhere near our best and we’ve got to keep heading in that direction.”

isak speaks to TNT

15:00 , Chris Wilson

Isak is speaking to Ferdinand, Crouch and Lynsey Hipgrave after his man-of-the-match performance.

“Normally we just press all the time but the game plan was a bit different today. The way the manager set up the team in the game plan was excellent and we executed it in a good way as well.

He praises teammate Guimaraes, saying that “he is excellent in all phases of the pitch”.

On the potential of winning the Golden Boot, he says that “is not really in my mind”.

“I feel I am in good form now, myself and the team too. We just need to keep going in this way and working hard.”

Postecoglou speaks to TNT

14:51 , Chris Wilson

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou says he “thought Newcastle were really good today”.

“We just didn’t get to any levels that would allow us to get a grip on the game.

“I thought even before the goals we didn’t have a real grip on the game like we usually do. It became a game of transition and we paid the price for that.

Even outside the goals I don’t think our football was anywhere near the level it should be.”

On what went wrong, he says that Spurs will “have time to analyse that, right now [I’m] not really sure”.

On van de Ven’s mistakes, he says “that’s the life of an elite footballer, you’re going to make mistakes”.

“I think all of us as a group have a fair bit to learn from today.”

Gordon speaks to TNT

14:45 , Chris Wilson

Anthony Gordon is first in front of the cameras.

“We knew we couldn’t play our normal way against this team because they are so good with the ball,” he says.

“We changed tactically, went man for man, and the game plan that the manager set us up with was outstanding.

“I think especially here at St James’ with the crowd, if we can score back to back, quite close then it can feel like the stadium is suffocating you. Trust me, I have been here as an away player and it definitely feels like that.

“It came at a vital time and from there I felt like we controlled the game.”

On the race to qualify for Europe, he says that “it’s massive”.

“We’ve had a taste for it this season and we want next year to be the same. With performances like we put in today, that won’t put us far wrong off that.”

FULL-TIME: Newcastle 4-0 Tottenham

14:41 , Chris Wilson

So a disappointing day for Spurs in a game that was crucial for their top four hopes. Ange Postecoglou’s side now face Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool in their next three games, and Manchester City just five days before the end of the season.

For the home side, it’s a fabulous win with some excellent performances. Isak and Gordon particularly stood out, though Barnes, Schar and Guimaraes all played very well too.

The Magpies face Crystal Palace, Sheffield United and Burnley in their next three games.

Newcastle defender Dan Burn spoke to TNT a little while ago.

He emphasised that Newcastle “have only lost to a few teams at home, but it’s definitely different to last season”.

“We have changed the way we have played since last season - it has been a bit different. Injuries have hurt. We have not been able to rotate the squad, but I am still very confident when we play at home.”

On Spurs, he says that they are “doing something nobody else is doing”.

“They have some real threat going forward and I think it will be a real open game.”

Newcastle have launched a new initiative which will allow deaf supporters to “feel” the atmosphere of games at St James’ Park.

The Premier League club have brought out a new haptic replica shirt which, when worn at matches, will vibrate in response to crowd noises.

The technology, which utilises microphones placed around the ground, will be used for the first time as the Magpies host Tottenham in the Premier League on Saturday.

It is a world first in sport but similar systems have been used successfully in other areas of entertainment, particularly classical music concerts.

Newcastle have found the net in all of their top-flight home fixtures this season, with Tottenham the only other side to achieve that.

Their run of scoring in 16 consecutive Premier League home matches is their longest since an 18-game streak from September 2002 to August 2003.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have failed to find the net in just one of their past 43 league matches - the 3-0 defeat at Fulham last month.

Ange Postecoglou: I’ve no interest in filming a new docuseries at Tottenham

11:27 , Luke Baker

Ange Postecoglou has no interest in following the lead of Newcastle and other clubs, which includes his own, of allowing the TV cameras inside the Tottenham dressing room to film a documentary.

Spurs return to St James’ Park on Saturday for the first time since their 6-1 thrashing last April, which features in a recent docuseries about the north-east club.

Episode three of the four-part series focuses on a match which proved the nadir of a sorry season for Tottenham and subsequently resulted in the appointment of Postecoglou in June.

This documentary about Newcastle is the latest in a collection of sports series by Amazon Prime, which includes Spurs’ 2019-20 campaign where then-manager Jose Mourinho predictably proved a TV star, but the current coach in the hotseat has no such burning desire.

With Aston Villa fading in the race for fourth, Tottenham go to Newcastle on Grand National Saturday sensing an opportunity to pull clear of their rivals with the finish line in sight.

Villa and Spurs are both on 60 points, but Ange Postecoglou’s men lead by a nose thanks to their superior goal difference. The top-four odds show Tottenham as favourite to finish fourth, and while fifth is likely to be enough to also qualify for the Champions League, it doesn’t yet come with the guarantee of top-tier European action fourth has to offer.

With Villa going to Arsenal on Sunday, Spurs can put some daylight between them and Unai Emery’s men but the hosts have European ambitions of their own and could move into the top six with a victory.

The Magpies hammered Tottenham 6-1 the last time they visited Tyneside but are home underdogs on betting apps for this latest encounter.

Newcastle United welcome Tottenham Hotspur to St James’ Park in the weekend’s early kick-off in the Premier League.

The Magpies face a Spurs team that has recently moved into the top four as they continue to hunt for a guaranteed Champions League spot. Ange Postecoglou’s side sit on 60 points, level on points with fifth-placed Villa but with one game in hand.

Eddie Howe’s side meanwhile, have struggled to replicate last season’s form and are languishing in eighth as they hunt a return to European competition next season. Nevertheless, they’re only two points of sixth-placed Manchester United, even if a return to the Champions League is pretty much off the cards.

Both sides have won three, drawn one and lost one of their last five Premier League games, though Newcastle’s extensive injury list may well have tipped the game in Spurs’ favour.

In any case, Tottenham will be eager to pick up three points ahead of a run of five games that will see them face Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City before the end of the season.
