Nevada Journal sports round-up: Cub baseball team gets two victories

The Nevada baseball team split four games last week and the Cub softball team finished 1-5 during the week.

The Nevada baseball team won at Greene County June 5 (15-5) and defeated Eagle Grove at home June 6 (10-7). The Cubs lost at Perry June 7 (4-3) and at home to Prairie City-Monroe Friday (8-7) in dropping to 4-7 overall and 1-4 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

The Nevada softball team lost at Greene County (14-0) and Perry (4-3) then defeated Colo-NESCO in a non-conference game June 8 at McCallsburg (14-1). The Cubs fell at home to PCM Friday (13-1) and they Newman Catholic (6-1) and Colfax-Mingo (11-1) at the Madrid Invitational Saturday in dropping to 2-11 on the season and 0-7 in the HOIC.

Statistics for the Cub softball games were not available at press deadline.

In addition to its loss to Nevada, the Colo-NESCO softball team lost at home to Collins-Maxwell June 5 (17-0) and at Riceville June 7 (14-2). The Royals defeated Baxter Friday by a 13-5 score to improve to 6-8 overall and 5-4 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division.

The Colo-NESCO baseball team dropped to 6-9 overall and 4-5 in the ISC South after losing to Collins-Maxwell June 5 (12-1) at Williamsburg (10-0), at Baxter Friday (6-5) and to both West Central Valley (17-8) and Gladbrook-Reinbeck (12-2) at the Colo-NESCO Invitational Saturday in Zearing. The Royals also defeated Riceville on the road by a 5-2 score.

Here is what we learned from this past week of Nevada and Colo-NESCO high school sports competition.

Nevada baseball team tops GC and Eagle Grove, falls to Perry and PCM

The Nevada baseball team jumped out to a 9-0 lead and coasted to victory against Greene County.

The Cubs finished with 13 hits and they only gave up three against the Rams. Karter Beving was the winning pitcher after allowing one run on one hit and four walks with six strikeouts in three innings.

Anthony Eaton was 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs and Griffin Tamburo 3-for-4 with three runs to pace Nevada offensively. Beving went 1-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs and Drake Hinson 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

In the victory over Eagle Grove the Cubs built a 7-0 lead and withstood a sixth-run Eagle fifth to come out on top. Colyn Groat was the winning pitcher after giving up six runs on six hits and four walks with five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Beving went 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs and Eaton was 3-for-3 with a double, four runs and one RBI for Nevada on offense against Eagle Grove. Jackson Burlage added a double, three runs and two RBIs.

Nevada jumped to a 2-0 lead against Perry. The Bluejays countered with three runs in the third and both teams plated a run in the seventh to leave the Cubs one run short.

Burlage took the loss despite six strong innings of work. He surrendered four unearned runs on seven hits and five walks with three strikeouts.

Eaton went 2-for-2 with a solo home run, Burlage doubled and drove in a run, Kole Beving was 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Hinson and Tamburo were each 1-for-3 with a run.

In the loss to PCM the Cubs were hurt by the Mustangs' four-run fifth and three-run seventh innings. Nevada pulled even at 5-5 after six innings, but the Mustangs' seventh proved just to be enough to hold off the Cubs' two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Sam Hanson took the loss after allowing one run on two walks and a strikeout in 1 2/3 innings. Riley Murphy got the start and gave up one unearned run in three hits and one walk with four strikeouts in three innings.

Hinson was 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs and Burlage 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and RBIs apiece for Nevada offensively against PCM. Colton Leslie finished 2-for-4 versus the Mustangs.

Colo-NESCO softball team uses a strong start to get by Baxter

The Colo-NESCO softball team could not do much right in its loss to Collins-Maxwell.

The Royals only had three hits and they gave up 14. Collins-Maxwell led 9-0 after three innings and the Spartans ended the game in the fourth with an eight-run outburst.

Abigail Hostetler, Rylee Upchurch and Riley Handsaker each singled once for Colo-NESCO. Callie Kohlwes was the losing pitcher after giving up 17 earned runs on 14 hits and five walks with three strikeouts in four innings.

Colo-NESCO hung with Riceville for three innings. The Royals only trailed 3-2 going into the fourth, then they gave up five runs in the inning and Riceville managed to pull away.

Annabelle Nessa took the loss against the Wildcats. She surrendered three earned runs on four hits and one walk with one strikeout in 3 1/3 innings.

Jasmine Johannes was 1-for-2 with a run, Molly Angell 1-for-3 with a run and Nessa picked up an RBI against Riceville. Hostetler and Handsaker each chipped in one hit.

In the loss to Nevada the Royals were held to two hits. Upchurch singled and drove in a run, Cassidi Bartmess hit a single and Kohlwes scored once.

Kohlwes took the loss against the Cubs after allowing nine earned runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts in three innings.

After three tough losses the Royals put it all together against Baxter. They jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and coasted to victory.

Kohlwes got the win against the Bolts. She gave up four runs on nine hits and struck out 10 with no walks going all seven innings.

Handsaker went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs and three RBIs and Kohlwes singled and scored four times on offense for Colo-NESCO. Upchurch went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, Cassidy Muschick finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, Johannes was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Katie Spalding chipped in a hit.

Colo-NESCO baseball team has a tough week

The Colo-NESCO baseball team had a tough time keeping opposing teams off the board during the week.

The Royals opened the week with their loss to Collins-Maxwell. Kaleb Gray was 2-for-3, Spencer Hansen and Drew Banks each had a hit and Breckin Clatt walked, stole a base and scored the lone Royal run.

Hansen took the loss in relief after giving up four unearned runs on two walks and one strikeout in 1/3 of an inning.

Colo-NESCO had six hits in its victory over Riceville. Trenton Beard was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI and Hansen 2-for-4 with one triple, run and RBI apiece.

Isaac Harrington and Landon Gjerde both singled and drove in a run against the Wildcats. Hansen went all seven innings as the winning pitcher, allowing one earned run on five hits and two walks with nine strikeouts.

Colo-NESCO could not shake a seven-run first inning by Williamsburg in its loss to the Raiders. Hansen had the only Royal hit off Williamsburg pitcher Carter Capper and Clay Gilmore took the loss after giving up six earned runs on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts in two innings.

The Royals fell apart late in their loss to Baxter in nine innings. They led 5-1 going into the seventh inning, but then gave up four runs to allow the Bolts to force extra innings and Baxter scored the winning run in the ninth.

Banks gave up one earned run on two hits and four walks with eight strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings and Beard allowed one earned run on four hits and four walks with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings against Baxter. Harrington was 3-for-5 with one run and two RBIs, Banks went 2-for-3 with a run and Gjerdes tripled and scored once for the Royals on offense.

At the Colo-NESCO Invite the Royals jumped out to a 3-0 after one inning against West Central Valley only to give up 17 runs over the next four innings.

Hansen went 4-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs against West Central Valley. Banks was 3-for-4, Harrington 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs, Beard 2-for-4 with a double and two runs and Clatt 1-for-5 with a run.

Hunter Purvis took the loss after giving up one earned run on one hit with three strikeouts in three innings.

In the loss to Gladbrook-Reinbeck the Royals could not overcome an early 5-0 deficit. They were also hurt by a five-run Rebel sixth.

Hansen doubled for the only Colo-NESCO hit off Gladbrook-Reinbeck's William Kiburis. Gannon Short and Colton Niemeyer each scored one run for the Royals.

Clay Gilmore gave up seven unearned runs on three hits with four walks and strikeouts apiece in 3 2/3 innings for the Royals on the mound.
