Nebraska women’s basketball opens season with win over Northwestern State

The Huskers commenced their 2023-2024 women’s basketball season with a high noon game against Northwestern State. Nebraska dominated its opening game, taking down the Lady Demons 90-42.

Six different Huskers broke double digits in scoring, combining for 78 points, 38 rebounds, 23 points off free throws and nine 3-pointers. Jaz Shelley led the way for Nebraska, snatching 17 points, six assists, five rebounds, four free throws, three steals and three 3-pointers. Alexis Markowski, Annika Stewart and Montana State transfer Darian White tied for the second most points scored for the Huskers, dropping 13 each in the win.

White finished as the team’s leading rebounder, hauling in nine. Stewart led the team in blocks, delivering two, while also grabbing seven rebounds of her own. Markowski was perfect at the free throw line, going seven-for-seven. She also finished behind White in rebounds with eight.

Callin Hake delivered 12 points off the bench, going four-for-four from beyond the arc. She also earned four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Freshman Natalie Potts rounded out the Nebraska offense, finishing the game with 10 points, five rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block.

The Huskers will hit the road for their next game, traveling to Wyoming for a Friday night matchup. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and can be viewed on the Mountain West Network.
