NBA Twitter reacts to Kyrie Irving opting into his Nets player option: ‘Lakers fans thought they could sign Kyrie for $6M’
Despite all rumors surrounding the Nets and Kyrie Irving, according to Shams Charania, the 30-year-old star is opting into his $37M player option and is bypassing multiple opt-in and trade scenarios to fulfil his four-year commitment to the Nets and his close friend Kevin Durant.
Fans on NBA Twitter were quick to react to the Irving news — which to some came as a surprise. Kyrie also took on Twitter himself to type in a statement a few minutes after the report.

Leaving $30M on the table would have been a poor business decision.

Ultimately Nets get what they wanted: Kyrie on a short-term deal.
Kyrie doesn’t get the long-term max, but he can play his way into a big contract next year.
Nets needed Kyrie as bad as Kyrie needed the Nets. That’s that.

Kyrie Irving never had any interest in going to the Lakers.
He just used that as leverage for the Nets to give him a long term deal.
The Nets front office stood firm, called his bluff, and will retain both KD and Kyrie for next season.
Masterful work.
