NBA All-Star 3-Point Contest: Who's participating, when does it take place, what's the 2023 format?

The NBA’s best shooters will compete in the 2023 3-Point Contest this weekend. The field will feature a pair of teammates and a former champion.

Indiana Pacers guard Buddy Hield returns to defend his 2020 crown against a new crop of participants. Hield will look to hold off his Pacers teammate Tyrese Haliburton, Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard and a first-time entrant in Sacramento Kings guard Kevin Huerter among others.

New York Knicks forward Julius Randle is a late addition. He will replace Anfernee Simons in the contest and is one of three forwards competing this year.

Will Randle continue the trend of surprise winners? Last year, Minnesota Timberwolves power forward Karl-Anthony Towns took home the trophy.

What is the format for the NBA 3-Point Contest?

The NBA 3-Point Contest will be sponsored by Pepsi-branded "Starry" this year. The contest will feature two rounds. All eight participants will compete in the first round. A random drawing will determine the order for each participant.

There are five ball racks positioned around the three-point arc. Four of the ball racks feature official NBA game balls and one multi-colored "money" ball. The NBA game balls are worth one point while the “money” balls are worth two points.

The basketballs within the four racks must be shot in order. The "money" ball must be the last basketball shot on the rack.

Participants also have the discretion to place the fifth rack of "money" balls at any station. For example, a player may put their "money" ball rack in the corner of the arc. These basketballs are all worth two points.

In addition to the basketball racks, there are two "Starry Range" shots. These are widely known as deep three-point attempts. They are situated in two locations. The first "Starry Range" is located in-between racks 2 and 3. The second one is located between racks 3 and 4.

The white "Starry" ball is worth three points.

Participants must complete each rack before moving forward. They must also start their shot behind the three-point line. For the "Starry Range" shots, participants must have one foot located on the floor decal provided.

How many rounds is the NBA 3-Point Contest?

The NBA 3-Point Contest has two rounds. Each participant will compete in the First Round. They will have 70 seconds to shoot as many of the 27 basketballs provided.

The three highest participants will advance to the Championship Round. The order will be inverse of the first-round scores. For example, the participant with the lowest score will begin the championship round.

3-Point Contest instant replay and tie Breakers

The NBA 3-Point Contest will also utilize instant replay at the discretion of the referee to determine rules compliance.

There are tiebreakers in place. In the first round, if a tiebreaker is needed, the participants will be granted a 30-second session to break the tie. This will follow the same format as listed above.

In the championship round, a full 70-second session will be enacted to determine a winner. This will be repeated until a clear winner is decided.
