NBA Rookie of the Year trophy to be named after Wilt Chamberlain
The NBA on Tuesday unveiled six newly-designed trophies named after legends of the game that will be handed out to the end-of-season awards winners, the league announced.
Beginning this season, the Most Valuable Player will hoist up the Michael Jordan Trophy, a nod to arguably the greatest to ever suit up. The bronze trophy will stand 23.6 inches tall and weigh 23.6 pounds, representing his jersey number (23) and number of championships (6) won.
The league will also introduce The Jerry West Trophy, which will be awarded to the Clutch Player of the Year. The award will be voted on by a media panel based on the nominations from head coaches and will honor the player who best comes through for his teammates in the clutch.
The Rookie of the Year award will be named after 13-time All-Star Wilt Chamberlain. He won both the Rookie of the Year and MVP awards during his first season in the league with the Philadelphia Warriors, averaging 37.6 points and 27 rebounds per game.
