NASCAR's Kyle Larson joins Team Penske as 2024 Indianapolis 500 favorites: 'That's insane'
It shouldn't surprise anyone that Team Penske is the overwhelming betting favorite to hoist the Borg-Warner trophy for a record-extending 20th time. But which driver is favored in the 2024 Indianapolis 500?
That depends on whose odds you take.
Pole-sitter Scott McLaughlin (+400 at DraftKings) and defending race champ Josef Newgarden (+500 at BetMGM) are the favorites, with teammate Will Power close behind.
In the mix with Power is Kyle Larson, who is competing in the Indy 500 and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday. Larson qualified fifth for his first IndyCar Series race. The thought that he's among the race favorites boggles his mind.
“Yeah, that’s crazy. That doesn’t make any sense to me," Larson said last week. "I think people are wasting their money. Well, maybe not, and I guess I hope to have people place their money on me, but that’s insane."
Indy 500 betting odds notes
∎ The driver starting from the pole position has the most race wins (21), but a pole-sitter last won in 2019 (Simon Pagenaud).
∎ Helio Castroneves, who is seeking a record-setting fifth Indy 500 title, will start 20th and is among the top half of the field.
∎ Scott Dixon, who won the race in 2008, is among the top 10 favorites, though he starts 21st.
∎ Graham Rahal, who qualified last among the 33 cars, is among the top half in the BetMGM odds. No one has won from the 33rd spot.
