Muskingum lost its first chance for a regional berth, but rebounded to reach the Super Regionals

BETHLEHEM, PENNSVYLVANIA — Muskingum rebounded from a 3-1 loss in the first regional final to top Roanoke 4-1 to capture the NCAA Moravian Regional Championship.

The Muskies advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals and will play Virginia Wesleyan in a best-of-three series on May 23-24. It's the program's first appearance in the Super Regional since the format was changed in 2014.

Senior outfielder Kalie Eshelman, sophomore infielder Eliana Shaheen, senior pitcher Madelyn Thomas, and freshman pitcher/designated player Tareyn Born were named to the All-Region Tournament team, with Born being named the Most Outstanding Player.

Freshman Tareyn Born was dominant in the circle, tossing a two-hitter with a pair of strikeouts and four walks. She hit a two-out solo home run in the first inning, and three batters later, freshman designated player Bethany Rodman crushed a three-run home run for a 4-0 lead.

Sadie Smith finished with two of the Muskies' five hits.

In the 3-1 loss, the Muskies led 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning on back-to-back doubles by freshman Natalie Smith and sophomore Eliana Shaheen. Shaheen's shot to center field scored Smith from second, as she had two of the Muskies' six hits.

Roanoke took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth on a three-run home run by Lilly Burns.

Senior pitcher Madelyn Thomas went four innings and allowed three runs on five hits with two strikeouts in taking the loss, while Born tossed three scoreless innings of relief.
