Murfreesboro area basketball postseason top performers: La Vergne, Cannon County boys reach state

La Vergne and Cannon County are both headed to the TSSAA boys state basketball tournament.

The Wolverines made program history Monday.

The Wolverines are going to the TSSAA boys state basketball tournament for the first time since the school opened in 1988, thanks to a 66-61 win over host Walker Valley in the Class 4A sectional Monday.

"We're very excited," La Vergne coach Tony Rutland said. "Last year we had a good opportunity to do the same thing, and I think the guys who returned put it on themselves to get there. We kept reminding the guys that our end goal wasn't just to make it to MTSU. Yes, we're happy and we'll celebrate, but at the end of the day the ultimate goal is to win the state championship."

Junior point guard Xialin Lenoir had a huge game for the Wolverines (23-11), scoring 29 points to lead three players in double figures.

"Our defense played really well," said Rutland, who got La Vergne to the sectional last year before being eliminated. "(Walker Valley) shoots really well, but we were able to contest and really limit the number of 3s they made."

La Vergne (23-11) will take on Independence (a 66-42 winner over Beech) in the 4A state quarterfinals at MTSU's Murphy Center on March 13 at 2:15.

Cannon County's boys basketball team is also headed to the state, going for the first time since 1985, thanks to a 66-50 win over East Hickman in the Class 2A sectional.

"It was just a collective group (effort)," said Cannon County coach Jared Nave, whose team lost star Theo Winters (ACL injury) during the region semifinals vs. Loretto. "Everybody stepped up when we needed. We made a few plays. It wasn't always pretty, but we got it done."

Demaurion Locke scored 25 points for the Lions (25-7), who will face Ripley on March 14 at 2:15 at Murphy Center in the 2A quarterfinals.

"So many people have laid the foundation for this to happen," said Nave, a former Lions player, on reaching the state for the first time in 39 years. "It's a bunch of good people around (the program), a lot of kids believing in the mission and goal, and riding it out."

Eagleville's boys were denied a trip to the 1A state tournament, falling at home to Frank Hughes, 66-59, in the Class 1A sectional. The Eagles finished 21-9.

WEDNESDAY

It wasn't an elimination game, but both teams knew what was at stake in the Region 4-4A girls basketball championship game Wednesday at Oakland.

The winner was going to not only play at home in Saturday's Class 4A sectional, but also avoid the state's top-ranked team in Bradley Central.

As glaring of a scenario as that was, it was left unsaid for Blackman's girls.

"Honestly, we didn't talk about it," said Blackman coach Jennifer Grandstaff, whose Lady Blaze defeated rival Oakland 41-36 to win the championship. Blackman (18-8) will be at home against Cleveland (a 75-43 loser to Bradley Central in the 3-4A finals) in Saturday's sectional at 7 p.m.

"Our kids are smart enough, they knew what we were up against. We didn't mention it. We didn't think we had to mention it. Our kids know how special of a team Bradley Central has. They knew the job they had to do tonight and they got it done. Hats off to them."

Oakland (18-12) held an eight-point second-half lead before Blackman began chipping away and creating a back-and-fourth contest in the closing minutes. Lyriq Mastin scored seven of her game-high 15 points in the quarter, all at the free throw line.

"We made buckets," said Grandstaff, whose team struggled from the field in the first half. "We kept battling and did a better job getting downhill and attacking the goal. We showed a lot of toughness and grit and persevered."

Oakland will travel to Bradley Central for a 6 p.m. CT game.

Eagleville will also be on the road in Saturday's 1A sectional. The Lady Eagles (18-11) were edged by district rival Moore County, 38-36, in Wednesday's Region 5-1A finals. Eagleville will travel to top-ranked Wayne County Saturday at 7 p.m.

Sectional winners advance to the state tournament next week at MTSU's Murphy Center.

The Lady Patriots battled back from 11 points down to force overtime, ultimately defeating sixth-ranked Cookeville (26-4) 66-60. Amaya Nash hit the game-tying 3-pointer to send it into overtime and Alonna Poole scored 30 points in the win.

"That's something we've talked about and done all season," said Oakland coach Jessica Southern, on the team's ability to overcome a deficit. "It really started with our first game against Beech (in December). Coaches talked about that game and how we fought back (from a double-digit deficit). We've had five of those games now where we've been down (and fought back for the win)."

Lyriq Mastin's 24 points, including five 3-pointers, carried the Blackman offense, and the Lady Blaze defense did the rest in a 43-38 win over eighth-ranked Lebanon (23-9).

"I thought our kids really locked in a did a good job defensively," said Blackman coach Jennifer Grandstaff, who has taken the Lady Blaze to at least the sectional in each of her four years at the helm. Blackman has reached the sectional five consecutive seasons. "We knew they were always coming off of (stagger screens, flare screens and single screens), and we did a good job defending that. We made it hard for them to score, which is the biggest thing I'm pleased with."

"(Mastin) has played well the whole region tournament. She's played with confidence, shot the ball well and hasn't allowed herself to get rattled. She's been a complete player for us, not just on offense. I'm real proud of her."

Eagleville (18-10) reached the sectional round for the first time since 2020 with a 47-32 win over host Richland, a team that defeated them by 11 early in the season, in the 5-1A semifinals. The Lady Eagles will face Moore County (a 45-43 winner over Cornersville) in Wednesday's championship game. Izzy Sawyer and Brinli Bain combined for 25 points in the win.
