Muenster girls take to the turf

Sep. 20—Muenster High School FCCLA hosted a PowderPuff Football Tournament Saturday evening and raised $450 for the program.

FCCLA stands for Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. It is a student organization for Family and Consumer Sciences that teaches kids various skills in leadership, problem solving, communication and more.

The idea for a Powderpuff fundraiser started with Savanna Wylie, a senior at MHS.

"I was from Argyle originally, and they always did powderpuff, and I always looked forward to it ever since I was little," said Wylie. "When I moved to Muenster, I realized that they didn't have that ... Me and a few other friends decided that we were going to put one on because it would be super fun for the community and it would bring in some money for FCCLA."

Wylie has been in FCCLA since her freshman year. She is currently one of the MHS officers as the Vice President of competitive events.

"We go out and we show certain skills of FCCLA, and we get to travel with it and bring it to newcomers," said Wylie. "One of the skills is sports nutrition, so it's a better way to think about eating, or being an athletic trainer, which I currently am for the football team. We also learn skills with running a restaurant and building a business for the future."

The FCCLA program has aided many students in becoming the best version of themselves.

"FCCLA is a big family, and when you go off to college or whenever you're an adult, you have life skills that you need to be a mom or to be a business person, an entrepreneur; it surprises you how many career aspects that you can bring into your everyday life," said Wylie. "It supports you and helps you to be more efficient as a human, so it not only supports you in your business, but also in becoming a better person."

Three teams competed in the tournament: the black team with mostly seniors and some sophomores, the red team with mostly freshmen and some sophomores, and the pink team with the juniors. It came to a final showdown between the red and black team, with the red team ultimately being victorious.
